The Denon AVR-3802 was a very popular device - it was no wonder, at a comparatively low price, not only above-average equipment features, which are otherwise only found in more expensive devices, but also a lot of sonic skills and powerful seven power amplifiers. A completely equipped 7.1 device - that is also the 1499 EUR cost, again available in gold or black version available new AVR-3803, which like the predecessor with a high-performance seven-channel amplifier. The power is still 150 watts per channel (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.7% harmonic distortion). The "new" is more expensive than the "old" - but Denon also offers real added value.

In particular, there are innovations:

DTS 96/24 decoding.
New analog devices Sharc Hammerhead 32-bit floating-point DSP (Sharc ADSP-21161 Melody 100) Compared to the Analog Devices DSP from the AVR-3802, the computing power of the new DSP from the AVR-3803 is about three times higher.
Sound-optimized preamplifier. Since the preamp and the volume control is especially important for the demanding musical enjoyment, this unity was given special attention. High-quality assemblies are used which, in conjunction with the audio DACs in differential arrangement, can represent an enormously large dynamic range. In addition, a variable gain is integrated, as a result of which the signal-to-noise ratio is also very high even at small and medium levels. The high-precision volume control of the AVR-3803 works in 0.5 dB steps. It can be adjusted in the range of -80 to +18 dB. The loudspeaker level setup can also be set in steps of 0.5 dB.
High-quality Burr Brown D / A converters (Type PCM-1791) with 192 kHz / 24-bit processing for all 8 channels. The PCM-1791 is operated in a 16-fold differential arrangement for all channels so that 2 converter units are available for each of the 7.1 channels.
192 kHz / 24-bit A / D converter for all 8 channels - for the first time in these price ranges. High-quality A / D converters (PCM-1804 from Burr Brown) ensure that the AVR-3803 can also digitize 192 kHz / 24-bit audio signals. The sound advantage of these high-quality A / D converters is found in all analogue sources, which require subsequent DSP processing. The dynamics capture increases by approx. 10 dB.
24-bit, 192 kHz Digital Interface Receiver: The new jitter-optimized digital interface receiver of the AVR-3803 can accept 192/24 stereo signals in addition to 96/24 stereo signals. Subsequently, the input signal is fed directly to the converters in the DSP program or in the pure stereo mode.
Video conversion. The AVR-3803 is equipped with a video converter, which offers a wide range of applications. For example, the conversion of S-video to component (YUV) signals. Detection is automatic, the highest quality is given priority. On request, a manually adjustable conversion is also possible. Which connected signal source should be converted as shown in the on-screen display.
100 MHz bandwidth of component video switching. The AVR-3803 offers the possibility to connect 2 components (YUV) video sources. An internal relay switching can guarantee a bandwidth of 100 Hz (HDTV-ready, advantageous for progressive scan signals).
Audio delay function, important for interplay with progressive-scan DVD players or other external de-interlacers. The time-consuming, intensive processing of the video material can lead to a time delay of the audio signal, which can adversely affect, for example, the synchronization of the lips movements when talking to the actors. This can be solved by the adjustable audio delay time (0 to 200 ms).
Multiroom features. A new feature of the AVR-3803 is that the amplifiers for back-surround operation, if not in use, can be used for multi-room use. Thereby, two powerful power amplifiers with 150 W each are available for room B.
AL24 Processing: Denon's proprietary Alpha processor, which is designed to reproduce digital signals with a macroscopic analogue waveform, captivates with a sensitive, dynamic playback of high-quality classic audio CDs. Interfering quantization distortions are suppressed, the finest musical details exactly worked out. Even DVD audio material with high sampling rates can be enhanced with AL24. AL24 Processing works in 2-channel stereo / Direct / Pure Direct modes.

Pure Audio Mode: Disabling the entire video electronics and the device display will prevent any kind of interference. In addition, the DSP board, which is not needed here, is de-energized.

Adjustable Subwoofer Frequency: Compared to AVR-3802, now adjustable: 40/60/80/100/120 Hz. If you use high-quality speakers, you can adjust the frequency to 40 or 60 Hz, which in practice is the audible advantage Has the fact that the active subwoofer is no longer to be found in the listening room because it transmits exclusively frequencies of such a depth that human hearing can no longer localize.

Newly developed, fully illuminated remote control
Various features of the AVR-3802 are also found in the AVR-3803:

Decoding of DTS ES Discrete / Matrix 6.1 as well as Dolby Digital EX
DTS Neo: 6 and Dolby Pro Logic II (with all settings in Music Mode)
Connection possibility for 2 pairs of surround speakers, so for instance, for the music operation direct lamps and for the home cinema dipole can be used, without having to be wired.
Different modes (matrix, non matrix) for the two back surround LS - more in the sound evaluation
