"So first, the theory - you can find it in this paper:

the relevant bit being section 3.3, page 9."
"In a system comprising several stages, such as the imaging lens and the pixel optics, light throughput is limited by the
system component with the smallest geometrical extent. Generally for CMOS imagers, pixel optics is the limiting
factor, . The microlens is intended to increase the geometrical extent of the pixel optics to that of the
imaging optics, . For a pixel with a linear fill-factor of 50% (
Gpixel Gimaging
Gpixel Gimaging / 2 detector pixel w w ), the numerical aperture
of the microlens should satisfy 2 or micro imaging NA NA /# /# / 2 micro imaging f f . In summary, the microlens should
have an f/# that is smaller than that of the imaging lens by a factor that depends on the desired concentration"

"Where the aperture is small compared to the focal length, high marked f/#, sin(theta) is very close to tan(theta), which is D/2f. Hence the effective f/# is very close to the marked f/# of f/D. However when the aperture is close to the focal length, the difference between sin and tan becomes significant.
A 50mm lens marked as f/1.2 has an aperture stop that is 41.6mm in diameter. Thus the Numerical Aperture, sin(theta), is 0.384 (compared with 0.416 if we used the tan approximation). Consequently the f/1.2 marked lens is effectively only f/1.3. That is about 0.25EV and a significant portion of the "error" that DXO Labs are reporting (more than 1/3rd of the error on the 5DII) although by no means the whole story. Similarly, the error is about 0.17EV at f/1.4 and also more than 1/3rd of the error reported by DXO Labs for the 5DII."
