LG teases 2nd-gen 'Alpha 9' processor for 2019 OLED TVs

lgg8alpha9.jpg

The 2019 LG OLED TVs will feature an upgraded 2nd-generation Alpha 9 processor, the company teases in a press release. It is not clear what improvements it will offer but LG used the opportunity the highlight HFR – or High Frame Rate – video content in up to 120 frames per second. The 2018 OLED models already support 120fps HFR but it is limited to streaming apps. The big question here is of course if LG will equip its TVs with HDMI 2.1.

LG's 2019 4K OLED TV will have speakers that move, ending the misery of black bars

lg-televisie-770x989.jpg

Okay, so normally when you're watching a movie in 21:9 aspect ratio on a TV, you'll see black bars at the top and bottom. When you switch to a Netflix stream in 16:9, the screen is completely filled. But then if you watch Fawlty Towers on UK Gold or an old movie on Talking Pictures, it'll be in 4:3 and black bars will appear on either side of the image.Well not any more. Not on LG's watch. It's latest patent filing shows a TV with a 21:9 aspect ratio and mechanically sliding speakers. The LG TV, which was discovered by the patent-library-searching newshounds at Let's Go Digital, is supposedly set for unveiling at CES 2019 in Las Vegas.

LG OLED WiSA wireless audio
LG 2019 OLED TVs will support WiSA wireless Dolby Atmos audio

wisa2018-1l.jpg

....LG confirms that its 2019 line-up of OLED and flagship LCD TVs – a total of 9 new TV ranges – will be ‛WiSA Ready’. What this means is that the user can buy an optional WiSA USB transmitter and connect it to the TV. This will enable the TV to “deliver unprecedented wireless sound” to WiSA-compatible speakers from the likes of Bang & Olufsen, Harman Kardon, and Klipsch. All WiSA certified products work together....

-LG Electronics has issued a press release today ahead of CES 2019, detailing the South Korean manufacturer's new 2019 OLED TVs with Alpha 9 gen 2 processor, and it appears they will have true HDMI 2.1 with high frame rate (HFR), enhanced audio return channel (eARC), variable refresh rate (VRR) and auto low latency mode (ALLM) support.

LG's 2019 OLED TVs are the 8K 88-inch Z9, and the 4K W9 wallpaper, E9 and C9.

We are sorry that our original prediction back in October 2018 that there will be no true HDMI 2.1 TVs at CES 2019 was wrong. However, it still doesn't change the fact that you will need to upgrade your entire video chain (source player, AV receiver, etc.) to reap the full benefits of HDMI 2.1.

LG 65-inch 8K OLED
LG Display shows off 88" 8K OLED with Dolby Atmos embedded

“LG Display will introduce an 88-inch 8K Crystal Sound OLED (CSO) display with an advanced 3.2.2 channel sound system embedded into the display. The sounds which emanate directly from the panel reach new audio heights, and when combined with Dolby Atmos, this acoustic innovation enables viewers to experience dynamic sound coming from their top, bottom, left and right,” the company said.

Re: -LG TV-Line-up 2019-

LG 2019 OLED to feature built-in calibration patterns for CalMAN

lgalpha9ces2019-1.jpg

The 2019 LG OLED and select ’NanoCell’ LCD TVs will support the auto-calibration (AutoCal) features first introduced last year but the two companies are also introduced two new calibration features.

The first feature is a built-in video pattern generator that ”greatly reduces the cost of entry to conduct a TV calibration” for SDR, HDR10 and Dolby Vision. In the past, an external pattern generator – which is costly – was needed but now the test patterns required to calibrate the display are integrated in the TV.

LG's rollable OLED TV is incredible, and it's actually going on sale in 2019

01-lg-rollable-oled-tv.jpg

...LG says the TV has been tested to 50,000 rolls up or down. So if you turned it on or off eight times a day it would last 17 years. I asked whether LG would offer additional warranty coverage on the rolly-uppy bits and company reps said that hadn't been determined...

We explore the user menu on LG's new C9 OLED TV at CES 2019, and list the improvements compared with the South Korean brand's 2018 OLEDs, including full-spec HDMI 2.1 with eARC, VRR and ALLM, new [Smooth Gradation] control, better calibration controls in [Game] mode, as well as [OLED Motion Pro] improved black frame insertion.

We filmed this video using the 77-inch LG OLED77C9, but it's also available in 55-inch (OLED55C9) and 65-inch (OLED65C9) screen sizes.

Hands on: LG OLED65R9 rollable OLED TV (2019) review

...We watch a range of standard 4K demo footage, including cityscapes at night, with the brightly lit buildings punching through the dark night sky.

The picture is glossy and punchy, rich in detail and with little noticeable noise. Switching to a daytime scene, we are treated to piercing blue skies and a vibrant, yet nicely balanced, palette. When playing a number of slow, deliberate pans, the R9 copes well....

2019 LG TVs -- Custom Tone Mapping explained...https://referencehometheater.com/2019/commentary/2019-lg-tvs-custom-tone-mapping-explained/

A new feature on some 2019 LG TVs, including the updated OLEDs, is the ability to define a custom tone mapping curve using CalMAN.

As this is the first TV to offer this option, I’m going to explain the basics of tone mapping, talk about how the process works on the new LG models, and then the potential benefits of having this capability.

Also we are going to review new features in LG 2019 models such as HDR that automatically adjusts the tone curve based on ambient light, an integrated test pattern generator inside of the LG OLED models and the option now to disable the white boost with HDR content.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Continuing their partnership, LG and Portrait Displays have added two exciting new features on the South Korean brand's 2019 lineup of OLED (including the C9, E9, W9, Z9 and Signature R Rollable) and select Nanocell TVs.

First is customisable HDR tone-mapping targeted towards content creators, and second is built-in test pattern generator for calibration (pitched at DIY enthusiasts).

Two things we forgot to mention in the video:

1) Engaging [Dynamic Tone-Mapping] will override the customised HDR tone-curves.

2) The TV will interpolate between the three "Mastering Peak" & "Roll-off Point" values.
