LG has been experimenting with how to improve its WRGB panels for several years, since the 2016 panel revolution, it has been using the same panels for 4 years (more or less), focusing on improving electronics, Smart TV, connectivity, tone-mapping , scaled etc, but the base panel is very similar every year. LG realized that one of the main stumbling blocks to improving the panel was brightness . And what was preventing the panels from reaching higher nit quotas ?. the white pixels and their location, since they were behind the RGB filter and this was responsible for "eating" part of the total brightness. The solution simple. Let's move the pixels from the bottom to the front (top). In this technology, in addition, the fluorescent filter used in OLED televisions (which generates RGB colors) would be replaced by a thermally activated delayed fluorescence ( TADF ) transmitter manufactured by the Cynora company . This technology converts the source that was used up to now to generate light by the new fluorescence transmitter and also allows reducing electrical stress in organic materials. TADF combines two advantages: the lifetime of fluorescence and the efficiency of phosphorescence. In addition, this technology is compatible with the manufacture of panels using 3D printers. Will the new C1 use this technology?

Using this new process would allow OLED WRGB TVs to increase peak nits , but especially overall scene brightness (APL). That is, the maximum peak could be around 1300-1400 nits, but the general scene would no longer be limited to around 150 nits when the screen is 100% white, if not about twice as much (300 nits).

Advantages

  1. Highlight brightness (L10) would go up from the current + -800 nits to 1400 nits .
  2. Placing the white pixels above (top) instead of below (bottom) would double the average brightness of the scene , lowering the ABL by up to 100% .
  3. It does not involve a big change in the structure of the panel, so we should not see a big increase in cost price .
  4. It would reduce electricity consumption.
  5. The life of the panel would increase even more than the current one ( 200.000 hours ).
  6. Even greater resistance to burns and retentions.

Drawbacks

  1. The uniformity will not be as good as that of a pure RGB panel .
  2. Will we continue the color stagnation at just 350-400 nits and everything else going pure white beam?

Although it is still too early to know if the new C1 from LG will carry this new and long-awaited evolution in OLEDs (TADF), most of the specialized communities are betting that yes, that this year 2021 we will finally see a big leap in technology OLED, which has been stagnant for several years and with a very poor evolution - at the panel level -. We hope they are right and we will see in LG's C1 that qualitative leap that TADF technology can bring. Stay tuned for the news on AVPassion, where we will be updating any news we see related to this topic.

Με WebOS 6 και ανανεωμένο Magic Remote οι LG τηλεοράσεις για το 2021.

https://www.lgnewsroom.com/2021/01/...signed-for-how-viewers-consume-content-today/

SEOUL, Jan. 8, 2021 — LG Electronics (LG) today announces the introduction of webOS 6.0 for its 2021 OLED, QNED Mini LED, NanoCell and UHD smart TVs. Paired with the new Magic Remote, the latest version of the company’s acclaimed smart TV platform offers viewers a more enjoyable and intuitive content discovery experience. The upgraded LG ThinQ AI in webOS 6.0 supports new voice commands for both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, making TV management and searching across streaming services, internet and broadcast channels easier than ever before.

Users familiar with webOS will immediately notice the attractively updated home screen redesigned for enhanced usability and to meet the needs of viewers’ changing content consumption habits. The New Home screen provides faster access to the most frequently used apps and streamlines content discovery with recommendations based on the user’s preferences and viewing history. All displayed full-screen to show preferred content and related information at one glance, the New Home acts as a central hub for settings and the greater webOS ecosystem.

Beyond the new premium design, Magic Remote offers simpler controls when using voice recognition with LG’s multi-AI offerings of LG ThinQ, Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Simple to navigate, slick, easy to hold and use, the new Magic Remote offers more user-friendly features including faster connections between the TV and other devices and hot keys for accessing popular content providers such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+.* Magic Tap, a one-touch NFC function on the Magic Remote, provides instant access to a host of exciting viewing possibilities. By simply touching an NFC-enabled smartphone to the remote, viewers can share content from their phones to the TV or vice versa. Users can view content stored on their mobile phones on their LG TVs while continuing to use their favorite smartphone apps and features.

Leveraging the latest in AI technology, TV voice controls and Magic Remote, all viewers have to do to get the info they need is speak up. Magic Explorer, an enhanced version of LG’s Magic Link, delivers informative content related to what’s showing on screen so viewers can learn more about the actors, locations and other items of interest in the movies and shows they’re watching. The content dependent feature also delivers the easiest and friendliest shopping experience for products appearing across select broadcast channels and LG TV services including Live TV, Gallery, Settings and TV Guide by changing the color of the cursor whenever Magic Explorer has information to share.

What’s more, the new Next Picks feature analyzes viewers’ preferences to discover more content suited to their tastes. Using viewing history data, Next Picks recommends two live programs from broadcast or set-top box offerings as well as one VOD title or app that viewers will find most to their liking, saving viewers the time and hassle of finding what to watch next.

“The latest version of our user-friendly open TV platform webOS 6.0 represents the most significant update since we first introduced webOS in 2014,” said Park Hyoung-sei, president of LG Home Entertainment Company. “With the new edition of webOS, LG is demonstrating its commitment of offering services, products and technologies that respond to the needs and wants of our valued customers.”

LG’s newest TVs featuring webOS 6.0 will be on display in LG’s virtual exhibition booth during CES 2021 starting January 11.

LG takes OLED mainstream with new 48-77" A1 OLED TVs...https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1610438331

LG will launch a range of more affordable A1 OLED tvs in 48, 55, 65 and 77 inches.
A1 has a 50/60Hz 4K OLED panel
HDMI 2.0, which makes sense given its 50/60Hz limitation. It will not support VRR either but will still offer eARC and ALLM, both of which can be supported on HDMI 2.0 chipsets.
It has the non-Pro version of "OLED Motion".

LG will also launch new B1 OLED tvs available in 55, 65 and 77 inches.B1 replaces BX.
B1 has a 100/120Hz OLED panel.
HDMI 2.1 for 4K120 and VRR (also FreeSync and G-Sync Compatible),
and "OLED Motion Pro".

The USPTO has denied LG's "QNED" trademark application in the USA, according to Business Korea

...which is also confirmed by a status update on the trademark application

We reached out to LG for a statement, and here's the company's response:

"LG always has a brand name for our products and communicates it as LG "brand name", for example LG OLED.

QNED can still be communicated as the brand name since legally, there are no restrictions or limitations on using QNED for product communications even without a trademark."

So the company continue to use the "QNED Mini LED TV" branding for its 2021 flagship LED LCD televisions.

Περί OLED Evo...

The LG G1 OLED TV features an OLED Evo panel which is capable of higher peak brightness than conventional OLEDs. We explain how the OLED panel supplier, LG Display, has achieved 20% higher OLED efficiency and peak brightness in 2021 using a combination of two methods:

1) The addition of a new green emitting layer, as described by Mr Bob O' Brien of DSCC (Display Supply Chain Consultants) in his interview with Mr Brian Berkeley on the Nanosys Inc. Youtube channel:

2) Substitution of hydrogen with deuterium (a.k.a. heavy hydrogen) in the blue OLED compound (change of supplier from Idemitsu Kosan to DuPont), as described by the CEO of UBI Research in an interview with The Elec:

http://www.thelec.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=10648

The Sony A90J & the Panasonic JZ2000 OLED TVs with higher peak brightness may also be using this new OLED panel from LG Display.
