LAS VEGAS--
Samsung's flashy CES 2010 Blu-ray news may be the BD-C6900 3D Blu-ray player and ultraslim BD-C7500, but the company also rolled out two mainstream models, the BD-C5500 and BD-C6500. Like most of Samsung's CES 2010 home theater announcements, details are scarce, but here's what we know so far.

Key features of the Samsung BD-C5500:
  • Low power consumption (13 watts during playback; .1 watts in standby)
  • Wi-Fi ready (requires USB dongle, sold separately)
  • Supports Internet@TV/Samsung Apps, which will provide content from Netflix, Pandora, Vudu, Blockbuster, Picasa, and Twitter
  • Meets Energy Star 4.0 guidelines
  • No release date or pricing announced

Key step-up features of the Samsung BD-C6500:
  • 15-second disc load; 15-second boot-up
  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • Meets Energy Star 4.0 guidelines, but doesn't have the same low power consumption as the BD-C5500
  • No release date or pricing announced
Internet@TV and Samsung Apps are Samsung's new proprietary content portals for home theater products. As of now, it's not perfectly clear exactly how it will work; Samsung says that the first free apps will launch in the spring, with premium apps following in the summer. There's no word yet as to whether services like Netflix and Vudu will be free or premium apps. With other players offering the same functionality for free, we expect it will be difficult to charge a premium for standard streaming media apps like Netflix.

Overall, there's not much info released about these players, although we're happy to see that the step-up BD-C6500 has built-in Wi-Fi, a step-up over last year's BD-P3600. We'll update this post as we get more information from Samsung.

3D is coming to Blu-ray and Samsung has announced its first 3D Blu-ray player, the BD-C6900. Details on the player are scarce, but here's what Samsung has announced so far:


Key features of the Samsung BD-C6900:

  • 3D Blu-ray player
  • Slim design with a transparent cover
  • Supports Internet@TV/Samsung Apps, which will provide content from Netflix, Pandora, Vudu, Blockbuster, Picasa, and Twitter
  • 15 second disc load; 15 second boot up
  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • No release date or pricing announced
3D is obviously a big story at CES 2010 and the BD-C6900 will be part of the first crop of Blu-ray player to support the new technology. As far as whether 3D Blu-ray is going to be worth the price premium, we haven't had enough hands-on testing with the new format to draw any conclusions--although we lean toward the skeptical side. It's worth mentioning that 3D Blu-ray will likely require a compatible HDTV and a new HDMI 1.4 cable, so the true cost of 3D will be relatively high.

Both 3D and Internet@TV/Samsung Apps raise more questions than answers, and there's no pricing or release date for the BD-C6900. We'll have to wait for more information before we're able to get a handle on how it will compare with other Blu-ray players announced at CES 2010.

Samsung unveils ultraslim Blu-ray player BD-C7500

Blu-ray players tend to all have the same boxy shape and glossy black finish, but Samsung has shown some truly unique designs in the past, like last year's BD-P4600. Samsung announced another uniquely-shaped Blu-ray player at CES 2010, the BD-C7500, which comes in at just 1.1 inches thick and "wood" exterior finish.

  • Wall-mountable

As you can tell from our review of the BD-P4600, although we give Samsung credit for trying, we didn't find the design wholly practical or worth the extra money. The BD-C7500 will likely be in the same vein, really only making sense if you intend to wall-mount your Blu-ray player or don't mind paying extra for the aesthetics.

εμφανισιακα παντως τη πρωτια τη κραταει ακομα το 4600...-bye- οσο για τους χρονους φορτωσεις οσο πανε και χαμηλωνουν...
