The story of Peg solo by Jay Graydon
Tedesco: Jay, give them the Peg background with the different guys...
Graydon: I don't know if you know how Steely Dan works- it takes them
a couple of years to make a record. They'll sit there a month with one word.
I mean they're insane. And when you listen to the record, it's just track!
It's a little guitar part an a vocal, and you hunt for why it took two years,
you know. But it's real stuff. So the deal is, Roger Nichols, tells them about me
time and time again. They don't know who I am. I was just servicing as a studio
player/soloist. They had six solos already on tape. I was the seventh guy they tried.
Tedesco: Who were the six guys?
Graydon: Robben Ford, Elliott Randal, Dennis Budimir, Tom Scott, and Walter Becker,
who's in the group. I can't remember the sixth. I heard all those solos later, and
every one of them was a bitch! I don't know what the problem was here. I mean,
obviously my ego made me like mine more, but they were still damned good, and I knew it.
But I did'nt hear them until the end. The session ended up being four hours on 13 bars
and about two hours on the fade.
It was like three hours befor the first lick came up, and it's a lick that I've worn out
over the years. It was hard to bring myself to play it again, so I changed it around a bit.
Tedesco sat next to me and heard it a million times before. But it worked for this trip
and we pieced it togehter. The solo was done in three sections, and they were patient,
man, but that's where they're at. They would go a night with me, and if I didn't get
anything, so what ? They've got six more solos, and they'll try it with somebody else.
And I'll tell you something:that sol did me a lot of good. I don't mind sitting there
being abused by guys like them if there's real ground for it. If the music is really great,
I don't midn sitting there playing the shit over and over and over. I'll come up with
something eventually
