The Cinema of Childhood is a touring film season which introduces British audiences to 17 brilliant movies about children from all around the world, which have rarely or never before been screened in the UK. The season is curated by the filmmaker Mark Cousins, and inspired by his feature documentary A Story of Children and Film, the first film about children in global cinema. Cinema of Childhood launches in April 2014 at Filmhouse in Edinburgh, BFI Southbank and other key venues. The films will be available until March 2015 in selected UK cinemas and online via Filmhouse Player and BFI Player.

Age of innocence: childhood on film

Cinema’s fascination with childhood is as old as the medium itself, enabling filmmakers to depart from conventional modes of storytelling as they exploit an adult awareness to reflect the undoubted otherness of youthful experience.

Growing Pains

Coming of age isn’t easyβ€”especially in the Criterion catalog. Not all the kids in the films below had to resort to, say, primitive savagery on a desert island following an authority-figure-obliterating plane crash, but other extreme youthful horrors abound, whether related to sex, war, poverty, or high school. Where some of these characters would end up as adults we can only speculate. One thing’s for sure: the young actors who played themβ€”from Bicycle Thieves’ Enzo Staiola to The 400 Blows’ Jean-Pierre LΓ©aud to Mouchette’s Nadine Nortierβ€”gave some of the most fearless, arresting performances ever captured on-screen.
