Can the BDP-103 be upgraded to the BDP-103D specifications?
Unfortunately this is not possible. The Darbee solution is built into the mainboard, so it is not economically, environmentally, or time friendly to swap out the BDP-103 components for the BDP-103D components. You will need to purchase the BDP-103D at its full retail price.
Is there or will there be a BDP-105D?
At this time the Darbee is exclusive to the BDP-103. Depending on the amount of interest and other feedback OPPO receives, they may released a BDP-105 with a Darbee solution. But there are no immediate or current plans for such a player.
Does the BDP-103D still have QDEO?
No. The Marvell QDEO processor has been completely removed from the player and replaced by the Darbee and the VRS solutions. The VRS handles 4K scaling, Detail Enhancement and Edge Enhancement processing, while the Darbee handles just Darbee processing.
Since there is no longer a QDEO processor, will there be a loss of picture quality and accuracy?
No. Like the current BDP-103, the BDP-103D uses the MediaTek SOC for all de-interlacing, scaling (to 1080p) and general video processing. So when the Darbee is set to OFF, the BDP-103D and the BDP-103 offer identical video performance.
Arguably, the HDMI 1 output of the BDP-103D will be better than the HDMI 1 output of the BDP-103 as some people observed a slightly less sharp image using HDMI 1. This was due to the QDEO enabling a small amount of Noise Reduction to this interface. Without the QDEO processor, there is no Noise Reduction defaulted to the HDMI 1 output, so some perceived increase in sharpness may be observed.
What Darbee settings do you recommend?
I personally recommend using Hi Def and no more than 35%. Depending on your seating distance, your display technology, and the source, you may find that you can increase the Darbee percentage without adding artifacts. Conversely, you may find some sources require less processing.
The player has a Darbee button on it, so OPPO encourages you to switch between the Darbee modes and values on the fly, so play and tinker with it to your hearts contentment. The Darbee is for your personal preference, as it is "beyond reference".
Since I can, I am stealing the following section from Bill McClain:
How is the BDP-103D different from the BDP-103?
The BDP-103D subtracts:
the Marvell Qdeo video processor
...and adds:
the Darbee Visual Presence video processor
the Silicon Image VRS ClearView video processor
...and replaces:
the remote with a new version with a Darbee button
All other aspects and functions of the two models are identical.
Is VRS processing the same on the BDP-103D as on the 983H and BDP-83?
The older players used Anchor Bay Technology chips with VRS. Since that time VRS was aquired by Silicon Image, which provides the solution used in the BDP-103D.
On the older players ABT peformed deinterlacing and scaling, but in the BDP-103D this is done by the Mediatek decoder.
The current Silicon Image VRS solution provides optional Detail & Edge Enhancement and Video Smoothing, and 4k upscaling.
How many Darbee settings does the player remember?
Darbee has four modes. The player remembers a separate Darbee Level for each:
Off (always makes Darbee Level = 0)
HiDef
Gaming
FullPop
In addition, the player has three user Modes available on the Picture Adjustment setup screen. These are user-defined presets and each remembers a Darbee Mode and Darbee Level for each mode, so the player will remember 3 x 3 = 9 possible levels (Off always being 0).
Is setting Darbee Level to "0" the same as Darbee Mode "Off"?
Yes, they are identical.
