OM Digital "OM-1 Junior", "OM-1X", "PEN-F" and Lens Renewal
2022.11.01
Gizmomo freaks has released a video interview with Hiroki Koyama, Associate Expert, Marketing Strategy, OM Digital Global Marketing, in conjunction with the announcement of the "OM-5," which gives a glimpse of the future roadmap of the OM System. I picked up some points that I personally found interesting.
It is an interesting development in which well-known photographer Mr. Kazushi Momoi cuts into Mr. Koyama about what MFT users want to ask him not only about the OM-5 but also about the future development of the OM SYSTEM. Although Mr. Koyama is talking as much as he can, I have the impression that the roadmap for the OM SYSTEM can be seen and understood.
Q Do you have high expectations for an "OM-1 Junior" type of product?
A :We are aware of the demand for "OM-1 Junior"-like products. I wonder what that is... (laugh)... I hope you will look forward to it.
Many MFT users may have expected the "OM-5" to be like the "OM-1 Junior" model. The "OM-5" was not an "OM-1 Junior" model, but I am wondering if it will be the "OM-5 II" or another model.
Q : The current lineup is all in the 20-megapixel class, is there a goal there?
A : If you increase the number of pixels, you have to worry about processing time for shooting, noise tolerance, and so on. I think the reason behind our decision is that we are taking into account the balance and rhythm of the entire shooting process rather than simply seeking the number of pixels.
Q : Are there any plans to develop high-resolution models or models with enhanced video capabilities?
A : Well, it's hard to say (laugh)... but we would like to have customers other than those in the current Pine, Bamboo, and Plum lineup use our cameras. For example, in the case of video, I believe that our strengths, such as image stabilization and dust and splash resistance, will definitely come into play, so of course we are considering (new products) with a different axis from what we have been working on.
It is difficult to set a schedule in the face of the Corona disaster, but I am sure that there are many MFT users who are interested in whether we will follow the lead of our competitors or continue to pursue our own original line.
Q : How do you rate the subject recognition AF and how has it evolved?
We are continuing to study ways to increase the number of subjects to be recognized and improve the accuracy of the AF system.
Q : What are the future plans for the OM-D E-M1X line?
A : We have received a lot of expectations and requests from our customers. We are not satisfied with what we have achieved, and we are working hard to deliver products that are even more powerful than the OM-1, regardless of how they will take shape.
At this point, we do not know if it will be a direct successor to the "OM-D E-M1X," but it is clear that we are developing a model that is even more powerful than the "OM-1. It will be interesting to see whether it will be the "OM-1X" or a new model based on a new concept.
Q : What are your future plans for the "PEN-F" line?
A : Looking at customer surveys, we have received very positive feedback on the design, profile control, and other features. Based on these points, we are now in the process of examining how to evolve the "PEN" series in the future.
There have been expectations for the new "PEN-F" for some time, but looking at the exchange between the two, I get the impression that the fact that the "PEN-F" is not linked to profits is a major barrier.
Q : What is the movement of Lens-II type renewal?
A : We are planning to sequentially change the lenses already on the market from the OLYMPUS brand to the OM SYSTEM brand. We will consider changing lenses that need to be renewed in line with this plan.
We have already announced that we will change the brand name of OM Digital from "OLYMPUS" to "OM SYSTEM," and it seems that we are planning to renew our major lenses in conjunction with the brand name change. In addition, the recently announced "M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 90mm F3.5 Macro IS PRO" is expected to appear in 2023.
He also talks about what kind of model the newly announced "OM-5" is, so we recommend you to watch this video interview.
