Verdict:

As a living room workhorse with a 65-inch screen and a price tag of around £800 give or take online, this is a bargain TV for normal living room duties. There are no perfect TVs at any price point and you have to compromise with which technology is going to work best for your budget and viewing conditions. This is not a critical movie viewing TV for dark surroundings but used in normal well-lit environments and it will surprise with some of its attributes.

With normal SDR TV and occasional scope movie viewing in a well-lit living room, the TCL C815K offers very good image accuracy, decent skin tones and superb colour reproduction in the Cinema preset. Blacks look decent although there is black crush with shadow detail if you go looking for it. Motion is strong with no obvious issues or motion trailing being visible and correct pulldown is applied to 24fps content. Sports also look decent with just some light dirty screen effect noticeable on bright colours filling large areas of the screen, such as fast camera pans over the green pitch in football games. We didn’t find this particularly noticeable or distracting with our viewing on the C815.

HDR is a little dim on the C815 due to it being an edge-lit LCD, but it still manages a decent stab at film content and in that well-lit living room it looks dynamic and engaging with very good colour reproduction. There are still instances of black crush, but with most HDR and Dolby Vision content the performance is what we would expect at this market position, which is good but not spectacular - you need to pay a little more for FALD and 1000 nits, and even those come with their own issues, like the Hisense U8QF and its local dimming switching off completely with dark scenes.

Overall, the TCL C815K is an honest, edge-lit QLED TV with a huge screen and decent SDR and HDR performance for the price point, which is not much at all. It does have its issues and is not designed for watching movies in the pitch black but used as an everyday workhorse in a well-lit living room it works incredibly well. If you have a need for such a workhorse, large screen size and decent performance with the lights on, the TCL comes recommended.

TCL's local dimming algorithm behaves similarly to Samsung's,preffering to sacrifice some shadow detail and small specular brightness to maintain deep blacks and minimization halation artifacts.On the plus side,this strategy kept top and bottom letterbox bars in cinemascope movies looking dark with minimal light bleed from adjacent bright objects even in challenging hdr movies.However in other low light scenes such as this campfire from "The Revenant" the TCL R635 would dim the subtitles and crush some shadow detail to keep blooming at bay.

The only differences (design) vs 50P610 I noticed were:

no unpleasant "chemical" smell after turning on a brand new TV set,
different version of the remote control: RC802N YUI4, instead of RC802N YUI2 in 50P610.
Owners of wireless headphones will be pleased to know that the 55P615 can be connected to headphones via Bluetooth.

Motion mapping
The TCL 55P615 is further proof that 60Hz LCD TVs are not the same after all.
After testing the smaller 50P610, I expected similar results, but the 55P615 was not the same - it was better.
But first a handful of background data on reproducing moving images:

no traffic smoothing function.
The dynamic resolution (ie sharpness of moving images) was almost 300 lines. You could see with the naked eye that it is a bit sharper than in the 50P610. In my opinion, this is not due to the properties of the vision path, but simply the LCD matrix with a shorter response time.


You can increase the sharpness of the movement by using the option confusingly called "Excellent smoothness of images in the LED motion" (hereinafter referred to as DPOWRLED). It increases the resolution of moving images from 300 to 450 lines, albeit at the cost of some flickering (but much smaller than in the 50P610) and a slight echo to the right of moving objects. The problem is that the name of this option can mislead many users, as it says "smooth images in motion". Well, this is a bug: the 55P615 does not have a motion smoothing function, and the DPOWRLED function enables backlight modulation and improves sharpness, not smooth motion.

In the factory settings of the film mode, the visibility of dark details was noticeably (i.e. with the naked eye) lower than the reference one, and the white level was set very conservatively, so it is worth making the following changes:

brightness: 50 -> 58 (will allow you to recover details in shadows);
contrast: 90 -> 96.
Optional changes:

black extension: large -> off,
dynamic backlight: auto -> off.
Like the 55P615, the 55C715 also does not use global frame dimming , although it turns off the screen when there is no signal.

HDR
In the HDR mode on the 10% board, the maximum luminance after three minutes of measurement was only 327 cd / m ^ 2 (in 55P615 - 267 cd / m ^ 2).


Finally, a word about static sharpness. Although the TV generally provides good sharpness for small-motion and static images, some sources showed a certain blurring in relation to the best rivals. I saw it most often, for example, in the YouTube application, when the TV had to scale the content, e.g. from 480p or 720p to 4K. The same content on other TVs looked a bit sharper. I do not know exactly what this is because of less effective scaling, or rather some background process, such as manipulation at the sub-pixel level ( sub-pixel rendering ).
