The 7390 2-in-1 is a convertible laptop, meaning that you can fold the display into a variety of form factors. It contains a 13.3-inch 1080p display with pen support, but a new feature of the 7000 series is that the screen is anti-glare and anti-smudge without sacrificing the quality of the display.

The more premium 7000 series also offers slimmer bezels, and the 7390 2-in-1 promises over 17 hours of battery life. It also has an HDMI 1.4 port, two DisplayPort over USB Type-C ports with optional Thunderbolt, and two USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports.

The Latitude 5290 2-in-1 contains one USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A port, along with two Type-C ports with DisplayPort and optional Thunderbolt 3. Naturally, as a tablet with a detachable keyboard (sold separately), it supports an active pen, which can write on the 12.3-inch 3:2 1920 x 1280 display. Dell is promising over 12 hours of battery life, but if you really care about the device lasting all day.

The Latitude 5290 2-in-1

In many ways, the Latitude 5290 2-in-1 is the Surface Pro for the business world. Everything from its understated appearance, relatively convenient maintenance, robust security options, quiet operation, and above-average port selection fits in perfectly with everyday office requirements. Beyond all of that, we still reap the benefits of an extremely sturdy magnesium alloy construction, an uncommonly bright and vivid display, very fast CPU performance, and good keyboard/touchpad (on the separately-sold yet crucial $150 Travel Keyboard accessory). Finally, the optional Dell Active Pen ($60) satisfies the demands of a unique subset of users who require precise Wacom pressure-sensitive active stylus input.

In many ways, the Latitude 5290 2-in-1 is the Surface Pro for the business world; its careful combination of consumer-grade luxury and business-grade sensibility adds up to a unique convertible that meets a very specific set of requirements.

But there are no perfect devices, and the Latitude 5290 does come with its share of notable compromises. Chief among these is battery life, where the Latitude falls sharply behind some recent competitors using Kaby Lake chipset SoCs. It’s also encumbered by high operating temperatures (both surface and internal) under load, though the heat has been redistributed somewhat away from the edges of the device (where the hands would typically rest). The standard warranty is disappointingly short for a device with such a significant price tag. The lack of Thunderbolt will probably irk some users who desire versatile docking solutions. And finally, coming back to the significant price tag we mentioned a moment ago: it’s expensive, at $1,932 for today’s configuration (which, to be fair, does at least include the Travel Keyboard cover and Active Pen).

The top competitors remain last year’s Latitude 5285 (which at least manages far better battery life than the 5290), the Microsoft Surface Pro 2017 (which is very good overall but impossible to upgrade and maintain from a hardware perspective), the HP Elite x2 1012 G2 (which is a very well-rounded device but notably harder to service), and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet Gen 2 (which is a good contender but hobbled by the constraints of passive cooling and other annoyances such as PWM). All of these devices feature their own unique sets of strengths and weaknesses, so before deciding on a business convertible, we strongly suggest taking a look at all of them. However, provided that 2-in-1 detachable functionality (and perhaps pressure-sensitive pen input) is an absolute must, there are few devices that manage as strong an overall performance as the Latitude 5290

Verdict

The Latitude 7390 2-in-1 is a well-built, sturdy, attractive machine with very good input devices and quick general system performance. It also features great connectivity options, easy maintenance, and a smaller-than-average footprint for its class. Particularly impressive is the option of dual-storage, made possible by the vacant WWAN slot, which can also accommodate an M.2/NVMe 2230 SSD. However, while CPU performance is still quite a bit faster than comparable machines from the previous generation, we see little justification for the Core i7 configuration we received as a review unit. Instead, unless single-threaded applications are the only items on the agenda, we’d recommend springing for a less expensive Core i5 configuration instead.

The Latitude 7390 2-in-1 is a well-built, sturdy, attractive machine with very good input devices and quick general system performance. However, it does have its share of drawbacks, and it certainly isn’t a small investment—so before diving in, we’d highly recommend surveying the landscape.

Elsewhere, the 7390 2-in-1 is also hobbled by a few other question marks. Only glossy touchscreens are available for configuration, and none of them is particularly impressive in the realm of color coverage—at least, not compared to category leaders such as the ThinkPad X1 Carbon. The NVMe SSD we received in our unit could hardly keep up with top-tier drives such as Samsung’s counterparts. The machine is fairly heavy for its size and, thanks to its thicker and comparably heavier display lid, it doesn’t feel quite as stable on the lap as we’d like. And lastly, there’s always the question of whether most people in business truly need the convertible functionality provided by these Yoga-style derivatives. Dell already has a perfectly capable, extremely well-balanced offering in the vanilla Latitude 7380 (and, though we’ve yet to review it, we’d presume also the 7390)—and it can be equipped with an anti-glare display, it’s lighter, and it feels more stable overall on a surface.

Other machines worth considering (apart from the conventional Latitude 7380/7390) are the excellent ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2018 and Asus Zenbook 13 UX331UA. At $2,109 (as configured), the Latitude 7390 2-in-1 certainly isn’t a small investment—so before diving in, we’d highly recommend surveying the landscape.
