Musical Fidelity Titan
New! Titan fully balanced, dual mono power amp.
1kW per channel.
Limited edition of 50 pieces.
Seven years ago, Musical Fidelity launched its kW monster amp, which got glowing reviews. Even better, customers loved it so much that the limited edition of 75 pieces sold out in four months. This was quite an achievement for Musical Fidelity’s first very expensive amp. What made it all the more remarkable was that, despite the kW’s outstanding technical and sonic performance, it wasn’t handsome to look at.
Musical Fidelity have realised that to make something that performed better than the kW, and also looked better, would take some serious thought. They waited five years while the idea ripened and then, two years ago, they started work in earnest on the Titan. The significance of this extended development time will not be lost to those familiar with Musical Fidelity’s rapid and efficient development cycle. Developing the Titan has been a gigantic project.
Musical Fidelity have done their utmost to make the best amplifier they have ever made. We hope that, when you hear it, you share their enthusiasm.
Basic specifications.
The Titan is a dual mono, fully balanced (from beginning to end) power amp with 1kW per channel into 8 Ohms, 2kW into 4 Ohms and just short of 4kW into 2 Ohms. This assumes that the mains supply is up to delivering that sort of continuous power.
Musical Fidelity have followed their usual pattern of having an external PSU, to ensure that there is no interaction between the Titan’s PSU (which houses 2 x 3kV mains transformers) and the delicate signal circuitry. The Titan is housed in two identically-sized, beautifully-finished cases.
Performance.
The technical performance of the Titan is truly exceptional. 1kW into 8 Ohms, 2kW into 4 Ohms and, give or take a fraction of a dB, 4kW into 2 Ohms. Of more interest are the distortion and signal to noise ratio. The distortion is fabulously low at less than 0.01% from 10Hz to 50kHz. Usually (but not with Musical Fidelity), distortion is only quoted at 1kHz. With most amplifiers, there are dramatic increases in distortion with rising frequency, so that the higher the frequency, the worse the distortion. This does not happen with Musical Fidelity.
The Titan is a whole different world from other amplifiers. While its distortion from 10Hz to 50kHz is less than 0.01%, even at 100kHz its distortion only hovers around 1%. We believe these are remarkable and significant figures.
Noise ratio.
The Titan has extraordinarily low noise. Considering its power, it is one of the quietest amps in existence. Not only do you get the monumental 1kW power delivery, but also a compelling ‛black velvet’ soundstage. It is 126dBA down.
Noise ratio doesn’t just mean that the amplifier is super quiet, it also means that it has huge dynamic range and that low level detail is rendered with astonishing clarity and accuracy.
The Titan’s ultra-low wide bandwidth distortion results in an incredibly clean, sweet sound. There is no grain or harshness or any ‛mechanical’ feel to the sound. The Titan sounds like a Class A tube amp. Smooth, effortless and, above all, natural. Well, that’s the case until dynamics come along and the Titan’s potential is revealed.
As you’d expect, the Titan has colossal dynamic range and will drive any loudspeaker, with authority and ease. In practise, it is almost impossible to clip or limit the Titan under any circumstances.
Sound quality.
The Titan is a hugely powerful amplifier with extraordinarily low distortion. It sounds like a delicate, Class A tube amp – until dynamics are required. We believe that this sound quality is due to the Titan’s inherent, ultra-low wide bandwidth distortion, super low noise, colossal load-driving ability and total system linearity. By system linearity, we mean that you can drive any loudspeaker and the Titan will always deliver a linear, low distortion response, regardless of loading.
A few more basics.
The Titan is fully balanced, from beginning to end. It has inputs for balanced and single ended, and two sets of high-quality loudspeaker terminals with 30 micron gold plating. The Titan also has a trigger input allowing it to be switched by the upcoming Primo Pure Class A, fully balanced, triode preamp, or any other trigger signal.
Build quality and aesthetics.
Musical Fidelity have spared no expense in the build quality and design of the Titan. The front panel is machined from a solid billet of aluminium and has an exquisite finish. All the heatsinks are made from custom extrusions. Even the top panel is made from custom extrusions. There are no exposed screws on the front, top or sides. Musical Fidelity have created a new visual identity for the Titan which reflects its subtlety, dynamism and unique circuitry.
Conclusion.
At £19,999 the Titan is hardly cheap, but it is the best amp Musical Fidelity know how to make. We believe that, like its forbear, the kW, the Titan will still be competitive in ten or twenty years.
