For some strange reason, the console managed to feed 3D signals through our Gefen HDMI 1.3 switch and splitter to Samsung C9000 and Panasonic VT20 3D TVs. On the other hand, a standalone Panasonic DMP-BT300 3D Blu-ray player hooked to the Gefens can only operate in 2D mode. What this means for home A/V buffs is it might not be necessary to upgrade to a newer 3D-ready A/V receiver with the latest HDMI 1.4 ports to playback 3D from a PS3. In fact, all that remains is a spanking new 3D TV or projector since we've ready verified that some older HDMI 1.3 cables are capable of carrying 3D signals in our earlier testing.</p><p></p><p>This "unusual capability" may have something to do with how Sony implemented 3D for its consoles, which come with only legacy HDMI 1.3 chipsets. These lack up-to-date 3D protocols (read: EDID) used by the latest 3D TVs, 3D Blu-ray players and other 3D-compatible devices to support 3D playback. While we cannot guarantee your PS3 will work equally well for your non-3D-ready setup, this "free upgrade" is definitely worth a try. We've contacted Sony regarding this and are awaiting for an official response from the company.
