Nokia goes Wimax
Nokia says it will start building WiMax phones next year.
Wimax technology could be a threat to mobile 3G networks in the future, but that isn’t stopping Nokia from getting its hands dirty with the technology.
The firm says it will introduce a Wimax-enabled mobile phone in early 2008. Nokia made the announcement at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco where it also said it is planning to throw considerable resources at the technology to support efforts to make it ‛a global broadband standard”.
Like Wi-Fi, Wimax uses microwave frequencies to transmit data, but it differs in that it is designed to work over very long distances, typically many kilometres. There is growing interest in Wimax because it is expected to be relatively cheap to rollout. In fact, its supporters claim it will be around 10 times cheaper to build a Wimax network than it is to build a 3G network.
Many of Nokia rivals, including Motorola, are also planning to release Wimax handsets in 2008 and other big technology brands, notably Intel, are vocal supporters of the technology.
