Ok, I've been asked this question a few times in other forums, and also read quite a few things at doom9.org.
I can play back HD-DVDs in TheaterTek 2.4. I haven't tried Bluray yet, but others can do so.
Before you try it, here are the limitations:
No menus.
No Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio Lossless support.
No subtitles (there is a way - if you now how to demux).
Requires decryption software. (AnyDVD HD or the other ones)
Can only play one EVO file at a time. Most HD-DVD movies are split over two EVO files.
The VC1 codec from Microsoft, which can be found in Windows Media Player 11. EDIT: I don't recommend using the Sonic Video Decoder - it does not appear to work with Haali Media Splitter!
Requires lots of hard drive space - it can be up to 3x the original disc size depending on what you want to do.
Requires a decoder pack that is not easily available - Sonic Cineplayer Decoder Pack 4.2 - needed for playback of Dolby Digital Plus tracks. Don't ask me how to get it, you'll have to figure it out yourself!
Requires Haali Media Splitter (aka Matroska Splitter), March 2007 version or later.
Proficiency at creating custom graphs. Not easy or for the feint of heart.
Steps, in a nutshell:
Backup your operating system. I mean it. Seriously. Bad things could potentially happen when trying this. Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost.
Download and install the latest Haali Media Splitter from here: http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/
Purchase/Download Sonic Cineplayer Decoder Pack 4.2 and install it.
Decrypt your movie. You should have EVO files or M2TS files.
Open GraphEdit:
Insert the Haali Media Splitter into the graph - this is your source filter. Alternatively, you can use the Haali Simple Media Splitter - it may expose more pins for more audio options. Choose the EVO or M2TS file that contains your movie segment (you usually have 2 EVO files for a full-length movie).
If the HD-DVD uses VC1 video you can connect the source filter video pin to either the Sonic Video Decoder filter OR Microsoft's WMVideo DMO Decoder (if you have WMP11 installed). If AVC video you will need CoreAVC or Cyberlink h.264 decoder (found in PowerDVD).
Connect the source filter's audio pin to Sonic Audio Decoder - you may have to use trial and error to figure out which pin to use if the movie has multiple audio tracks. Note: You might need to use FFDShow Audio Decoder if the track is plain DD5.1 and not DD+ - Sonic Audio Decoder might have problems with those.
Connect the video decoder to your video renderer of choice. Video Mixing Renderer, Video Mixing Renderer 9, or Overlay. Whatever you like.
Connect the audio decoder to your audio renderer of choice. Directsound, Reclock, Waveout...
Press play. If you get video and audio, congratulations!
Save the graph as the same name as your EVO files, except with the .GRF extension.
Try opening the EVO file with TheaterTek. If it doesn't play at least as well as GraphEdit, you might need to rename the EVO file with an MKV extension, and rebuild the graph! (I had to do this for some reason).
That's it in a nutshell, I hope. Good luck - you will need it!
Note that I did not disconnect the pins. Also note that I placed the graph in the same directory as the EVO files. I do not yet use a graph in the TheaterTek Data directory for general EVO playing. This is specific to each movie title right now - as I am still experimenting with filters.
