Sony has launched three new 4K projectors at IFA 2018, namely the lamp-based VPL-VW270ES and VPL-VW570ES, as well as the Sony VPL-VW870ES with laser light engine.

This video includes a first look at a pre-production unit of the Sony VW870 which retails for 25,000, shipping mid-November. We measured the SDR colour accuracy after calibration, DCI-P3 gamut coverage, and input lag in both 1080p SDR and 4K HDR modes.

When asked about the possibility of Dolby Vision support, Sony's official statement is "It is not possible to support Dolby Vision on existing Sony 4K HDR projectors due to hardware limitations, but we are investigating support on future models."

We get hands-on and talk to Chris Mullins, Sony's Head of Home Cinema Projectors, about the new VPL-VW870ES Laser projector and entry-level VW270ES and mid-range VPL-VW570ES bulb based native 4K machines. We saw these projectors back in early August and they have been officially announced at IFA 2018 on the 30th of August.

Features include SXRD panel technology with true 4K (4096x2160) resolution, Reality Creation video processing engine, TRILUMINOS colours, HDR10 & HLG compatibility, and motorised lens zoom and shift.

Upgrades over last year's VPL-VW260ES (or VPL-VW285ES in the States) include two full-bandwidth 18Gbps HDMI 2.0 inputs for 4K/60p support and 4K Motionflow.
