McIntosh MDLP1 1080p DLP front projector and VP1000 dual-zone video switcher/processor
Dynamic Duo
Of all the storied American audio brands established after the Second World War, perhaps none has the rich history associated with the McIntosh marque.
Founded and run by engineers, the company produced audio components that stood out from competitors with their trademark cut-glass front panels, highlighted with blue-lit meters and a green-glowing McIntosh logo—a trade dress that continues to this day.
Independently owned for many years, McIntosh was acquired by car-audio company Clarion in the 1990s and was recently folded into the growing repertoire of brands under the D&M Holdings umbrella, which includes stablemates such as Denon, Marantz, Boston Acoustics, Escient, and a number of other consumer and professional brands.
Considering that Marantz is one of McIntosh’s sister companies, it should come as no surprise that the MDLP1 is a derivative of Marantz’s flagship single-chip 1080p front projector, a top performer in its own right. While the McIntosh version retains the ovoid, curved chassis of its cousin, the dark-charcoal-gray cabinet adds a distinctive richness, and the top panel has been redesigned with the McIntosh livery, featuring a smooth, polished facia housing the trademark green McIntosh logo and switchgear that matches to a T that of the company’s other components.
Given the MDLP1’s provenance, I was certainly not surprised by the projector’s fine test-bench performance, achieving top marks in color accuracy and gray-scale performance. Like its sibling, the MDLP1 is equipped with one of the better-performing video-processor chips, in this case a Gennum VXP. As I found when I previously tested the first Marantz 1080p DLP projector, which was similarly equipped, the MDLP1 sailed through the toughest torture-test deinterlacing patterns, producing a first-rate picture that was at all times colorful, vivid, and devoid of any aberrant picture artifacts.
The projector is fully prepared for anamorphic widescreen viewing, and McIntosh offers the companion LK1 motorized lens option that, with a variable-width screen like Stewart’s CineCurve, provides real, in-home theater 2.35:1 presentations with no black bars at the top and bottom of the screen image.
Even though the projector is equipped with a 200-watt lamp (compared with other models in its class that usually feature 300-watt bulbs), the McIntosh lamp is a direct current (DC) type that provides more than sufficient output to handle even large screen sizes. McIntosh offers the projector in medium- and long-throw versions, with the long-throw variant being the preferred choice for back-of-the-theater mounting, now the most popular installation configuration.
Even though the MDLP1 is equipped with a fairly generous input panel, McIntosh saw the need for a companion dual-zone video switcher and processor, and the company now offers the VP1000 for deluxe installations that need wholehouse video distribution and require more input and output switching flexibility than the typical A/V front-end processor provides. Equipped with no less than 22 inputs, the VP1000 includes not one but two video processors on board, which allows dual-zone video operation, along with what McIntosh claims to be an industry first: high-definition picture-in-picture with the option of picture-by-picture (split-screen) viewing.
You can independently configure the VP1000’s dual analog and digital video output pairs to one of nine different resolutions to suit the connected displays’ requirements, from 480i (standard definition) all the way through the various high-definition settings up to 1080p. I also like the inclusion of a Night mode, which allows me to adjust the brightness and contrast for times when the theater room is fully darkened, with a brighter picture available during the day. Numerous other picture adjustments are included to allow your installer to overcome the lack of such features in some displays so that every source looks as good as it can.
My enthusiasm for the VP1000’s rich feature set and fine-looking performance with both Blu-ray and HD DVD programs was dampened somewhat when I ran the same 1080i deinterlacing test patterns that I previously used with the MDLP1. Here, the VP1000 had a hard time of it, producing quite noticeable flashing and flickering, classic behavior of a processor not quite up to the task of properly deinterlacing 1080i sources to 1080p.
I relayed my findings to McIntosh, who promised to look into the matter. A week or so later, I received an email with a “patch” program that allowed me to update the VP1000’s internal firmware with my laptop computer, a process that took all of a minute or so. By now, shipping units will have the update already included, and dealers can just as easily and quickly update earlier units that are already in the field.
Once updated, the VP1000 transformed into a test-pattern champion, giving me flicker-free results with nary an artifact. The 1080i-to-1080p deinterlacing function is a critical performance metric, and the newly invigorated VP1000 measures up to other first-rate video processors. While 1080p-native high-definition discs are now becoming available, the majority of broadcast, cable, and satellite HD programming is in the 1080i format, so the improvement provided by the update will ensure that those sources always look their best with modern 1080p displays.
The addition of the MDLP1 projector and the companion VP1000 processor to McIntosh’s extensive lineup allows their dealers to provide a complete stem-to-stern McIntosh home theater system. Individually, the MDLP1 and VP1000 is each a stellar performer in its own right, and together they work harmoniously in concert to provide a truly stunning and versatile big-screen experience.
