Canadian Company i4i Ltd has won $200 million in damages in a patent infringement case against Microsoft. Microsoft was accused of patent violation while customizing XML for MS Word 2003 and Ms Word 2007.
i4i's case is centered on Microsoft's method for processing Word files using embedded codes that provide instructions on how information appears. Both MS Word 2003 and MS Word 2007 use extensible markup language or XML. i4i says that Microsoft s method of customizing XML for its products infringes its patent.
In 2003, Microsoft was sued by software developer Uniloc for patent infringement. Subsequently, Microsoft was ordered to pay $388 million in damages to the company last month. Microsoft has said that it is appealing against both verdicts. Though admittedly, not many people use custom XML while using MS Word.
