LG To Show Off New 55-Inch 8K Display at CES

One of the most in-your-face buzzwords of the past year has been "4K," and there's little doubt that the forthcoming CES show in early January will bring it back in full force. As it stands today, 4K really isn't that rare, or expensive. You can even get 4K PC monitors for an attractive price. There does remain one issue, however; a lack of 4K content. We're beginning to see things improve, but it's still slow going. Given that, you might imagine that display vendors would hold off on trying to push that resolution envelope further – but you just can't stop hardware vendors from pushing the envelope. Earlier this year, both Apple and Dell unveiled "5K" displays that nearly doubled the number of pixels of 4K displays. 4K already brutalizes top-end graphics cards and lacks widely available video content, and yet here we are looking at the prospect of 5K. Many jaws dropped when 4K was first announced, and likewise with 5K. Now? Well, yes, 8K is on its way. We have LG to thank for that. At CES, the company will be showing-off a 55-inch display that boasts a staggering 33 million pixels — derived from a resolution of 7680x4320. It might not be immediately clear, but that's far more pixels than 4K, which suggests this whole "K" system of measuring resolutions is a little odd. On paper, you might imagine that 8K has twice the pixels of 4K, but instead, it's 4x.

http://www.digitaltvinfo.gr/news/news-hdtv/item/14866-tora-kai-othones-10k

Notice how shadows and areas around the hairline pixellate. Here, the effective resolution is lower than 8K.

fake8k-2l.jpg

In the other example, you can see how it works. Pixels are controlled in clusters of four. With this shade of green, only one pixel is lit, while the three other pixels are either dimmed down or turned off. In the worst case scenario, you get 4K resolution but this will require special test patterns. With real content, you are more likely to see effective resolution somewhere between 4K and 8K.

fake8k-1l.jpg

As you may have guessed, sub-pixel rending does have drawbacks, with the main one being lower effective resolution when the wide viewing angle system is active. When examining the pixel structure more closely, we found that the LCD panel has a gate pattern that negatively affects picture details.

The photo to the right illustrates the same picture section from Samsung Q90R and Sony A9F, revealing that you some of the finer details (i.e. the pupil) in the picture are lost, and that color gradients or contrast transitions (around the hair) appear with dithering artefacts.

Samsung_Q90R_Sony_AF9_03.jpg

Samsung_Q90R_Sony_AF9_05.jpg

"For a “real 8K” experience, pixels must be easily distinguishable from one another. According to the ICDM, Contrast Modulation (CM), which measures precisely if neighbouring pixels are distinguishable from one another- is the relevant way to measure and describe display resolution.

For any TV display to deliver the resolution indicated by its pixel count, the ICDM requires the minimum CM value to exceed a threshold of 25% for images and 50% for text. An 8K TV with a CM value that is lower than these required thresholds does not deliver real 8K, even though the TV may in fact have the sufficient number (7,680 x 4,320) of pixels"

Using as few as one-in-four pixels for 25% brightness will result in having lower CM values. Turning off pixels versus dimming them is a much lower-cost way to lower brightness at the expense of detail, HDR and colour. The customer is not getting a true 8K image nor brightness.

Samsung's Q900R is using one-in-four pixels producing a fly-screen effect. When you know what to look for the flyscreen effect – pixelation – becomes obvious as a much softer focus in dimmer areas and a loss of HDR detail.

Οne in four pixels turned off – notice fly screen effect in Samsung Q900R 8K

Re: 8Κ

Samsung, LG spar over picture quality of 8K TVs

LG once again accused Samsung of exaggerated, misleading marketing of its 2019 QLED 8K TVs and demanded more details

LG currently suspects that Samsung’s new application of viewing angle compensation film to 2019 models must have compromised their CM levels.

Samsung’s 8K TVs made in 2018 had sufficed the CM levels at a stellar record of 90 percent.

“We assume there must have been a trade-off (of better viewing angle for lesser CM), but that should not lower the TV’s resolution below what it purports to be,” Nam said

LG explains Samsung QLED 8K TVs' sudden fall in CM levels from 90% in 2018 to 15% in 2019 (Lim Jeong-yeo/The Korea Herald)

Intertek and VDE report

CM, or contrast modulation, is the level of distinction between the luminance of white and the luminance of black on a screen.

The higher the CM the clearer the distinction between white and black, therefore producing sharper images.

ICDM set the threshold for CM levels for text-displaying screens at 50 percent and image-displaying screens at 25 percent.

In 2012, the ICDM said that contrast modulation is “the best way to describe display resolution” and made it mandatory for companies to report it.
