Popular high-end cinema lens maker Cooke Optics has announced the SP3 prime lens series for mirrorless cameras, promising to deliver a cinematic look to the modern videography market.
The SP3 range of full-frame prime lenses comprises five focal lengths, with each prime lens delivering a T2.4 aperture. Each lens also features a choice of user-changeable mounts without compromising what Cooke calls a “small, lightweight yet robust construction.”
The Cooke Optics SP3 range includes 25mm, 32mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm focal lengths. Each lens has Sony E-mount hardware installed, although RF-mount versions will be available soon. Early adopters can receive a set of RF mounts at no cost. Cooke also says that L-Mount is available now as an accessory part, and M-Mount parts will be available next year.
“SP” stands for “Speed Panchro,” a legendary name in cinema lenses. The original Cooke Speed Panchro lenses remain highly sought after by filmmakers, and the lenses have profoundly impacted cinema.
“The imaging market has long been viewed as ‘videography’ and ‘cinematography,’ with their associated differences particularly evident in budgets and hardware. However, these boundaries are now blurring with vast improvements in the quality of ‘mid-market’ camera performance and consequently the creative optical possibilities and ambitions in this area are widening. This ‘democratization’ means that we can now offer truly cinematic glass to the traditional pro-video market at an accessible price point and with flexibility of camera mounts, enabling more directors of photography to enhance the narrative of their stories,” says Tim Pugh, Chief Executive Officer, Cooke Optics.
The new SP3 series channels the original Speed Panchro spirit but features a novel design Cooke Optics says is optimized “optically and mechanically” for mirrorless cameras. The company promises that its new primes deliver outstanding resolution but with the characteristic fall-off of the original SP lenses.
“[The SP3 series] offers outstanding definition and resolution yet features fall-off towards the edge of frame, which is a key factor in the famous cinematic look achieved by the legendary Speed Panchro lenses together with the trademark dimensionality and contrast performance that renders faces with remarkable skin tone and character, known as The Cooke Look. The SP3s also feature specialized cinematic optical coatings that ensure control of excessive flare,” explains Cooke Optics.
The SP3s are also some of Cooke’s lightest lenses yet. Depending on their focal length and mount, the lenses weigh between 1.1 pounds (500 grams) and 1.52 pounds (690g). Cooke Optics says the lenses will work well on gimbals and drones.
Each lens includes a dual focus scale, and the manual lenses’ focus and iris mechanics are aligned across the set, ensuring that users can swap between lenses without rearranging focus and aperture motors.
The five-lens bundle set includes a custom heavy-duty case.
The Cooke Optics SP3 range will be available starting around the middle of this month. A single lens costs $4,500, while the complete set of five lenses will be bundled alongside a heavy-duty case for $21,375.

XEEN has just announced the addition of two new wide-angle lenses inside its Meister lineup: a 14mm T2.6 and a 24mm T1.3. Like the XEEN Meister 35/50/85mm T1.3, these wide-angle lenses feature a 43.2mm image circle and cover full-frame image sensors. Also, they have 13 iris blades, the focus ring has 300° of rotation, and they’ll be available in either PL, Canon EF, or Sony E-Mount. So, let’s take a closer look at them!
XEEN Meister 3-Lens Kit (PL)
The XEEN Meister primes were introduced in November 2021 with three focal lengths: 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm, all with a maximum aperture of T1.3. The Meister primes cover full-frame image sensors. Overall, the lenses have interesting specifications, but very little footage shot with them was available online. More importantly, the announcement did not include any information regarding pricing.
Last year, XEEN unveiled the price of the Meister primes: $21,995 for the three-lens set. XEEN is mainly known for its affordable pieces of glass, and with a cost per lens at $8,495, only a few saw that coming. Indeed, at that price point, you’re asking for more money than well-established brands and lens sets, such as the ZEISS CP.3, SIGMA High-Speed, Tokina Vista, Canon Summire, etc. To this day, I have not seen the XEEN Meister primes hit the rental houses or any project shot with them.
Back to our topic, XEEN has just announced the inclusion of two new lenses in their lineup: a 14mm T2.6 and a 24mm T1.3.

XEEN Meister Prime 14mm T2.6 and 24mm T1.3 – features
Like every lens set at this price point, the new XEEN Meister 14mm T2.6 and 24mm T1.3 have a lot in common with the other lenses in the set, including:- A 43.2mm image circle that covers full-frame image sensors.
- A 114mm front diameter, except for the 14mm T2.6, which is 134mm. The front barrel is made of titanium.
- 13 aperture blades.
- A 300-degree focus throw. The aperture and focus gear rings are at the same position between each lens. Also, the scales are on both sides of the lens and feature a luminous font.
- Available in either Canon EF, Sony E, or PL mount.
- The PL mount version supports the Cooke i-Technology protocol that can record the lens metadata.
- According to XEEN, the lenses all feature the same X-coating that “effectively controls the internal light reflections to create a distinctive look, with flare and ghosting for dramatic effects.”
Lens specifications of the XEEN Meister 14mm T2.6 and 24mm T1.3. It’s nice to see XEEN expanding their lineup of Meister primes with wide-angle lenses, as 35mm is a bit long if you want to shoot in tight spaces.
Pricing and availability
There is no information regarding the price or availability of these new XEEN Meister 14mm T2.6 and 24mm T1.3 lenses. It shouldn’t be too much of a risk to say that both lenses could retail for at least $8,495. If you are attending IBC 2023 in Amsterdam next week, you can see the lenses at XEEN’s booth.

Canon CN-R Cinema Lenses with Native RF Mount Announced | CineD

Just before the start of IBC 2023 later this week, Canon announced today that they will start offering their cinema lenses with native RF mounts, next to the existing EF and PL options. The first lenses with the native RF mounts will be the seven CN-R prime lenses. Communication between the RF lenses and cameras will allow control of the same features as the CN-E EF lenses offer.
CN-R 14mm T3.1 L F Cinema Prime Lens (Canon RF)
Canon will offer their first modern cine lens series, the original CN-E EF-mount cine primes with native RF-mounts and the resulting name CN-R. The focal lengths and T-stops remain the same, but the native RF mount will allow communication between the RF lenses and cameras without the need for a lens adapter.

Canon is planning to release more of their cinema lenses with RF-mount options to enable native communication between their professional cine lenses and RF-mount cameras, like their currently available EOS C70 and EOS R5 C.
The company is advertising these lenses highlighting their “high optical performance, suitable for use with 4K and 8K cameras by optimally positioning large-diameter aspherical lens elements and lens elements with anomalous dispersion glass.” Canon’s cinema prime and zoom lenses are color-balanced to provide uniform color consistency across the entire range.

Pricing and availability
The new CN-R cine prime lenses with RF-mount will be available in phases starting in late January 2024 with 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm focal lengths. Following up in late February 2024, the 14mm will become available, with the 20mm lens available in late March 2024. The last lens to become available will be the 135mm focal length in late April 2024.Lenses will be priced between $3950 and $4220, depending on the focal length.
At this point, we don’t have any information as to whether the RF lens mounts will be available separately, if they will be compatible with existing CN-E lenses, or if you will have to buy new lenses for the native RF mount.
