Who says plasma is dead? Not LG. The company passed the 60 inch 60PK550-UD plasma TV through the FCC today, along with a sister 50” model.

There’s not much information contained in FCC filings. However, we do know that these are 1080p TVs that will weigh in at 67.6 lbs and 109.1 lbs for the 50” and 60” models, respectively.

While the number of plasma TV manufacturers has shrunk, it’s good to see LG still making a strong effort here.

Αν το κάδρο της είναι περί τα 3cm, γιατί όχι; Το πλάτος μίας οθόνης 50" είναι περίπου 111cm...

LG's best plasma adds Wii-like remote control

LG calls it a "Magic Wand" remote and, according to the company, "This 'Magic' user interface brings together menus, component controls and even embedded games, which can be accessed using a simple remote that combines minimal buttons and gestures to control the on-screen activity." In our experience, using a WiiMote to select screen icons is an experience that ranges from annoying to rage inducing, but we'll leave off panning the Magic Wand until we actually get to use one.

LG PK950 series features:

  • Magic Wand remote and user interface
  • TruBlack filter
  • THX certification
  • Netcast Interactive feature suite with Netflix, Vudu, Skype, Napster, YouTube, DivX, AccuWeather, and Yahoo Widgets
  • DLNA compatible for music, photos, and video
  • Optional "Wireless Media Hub" interface
  • Optional Wi-Fi connection
  • Single-layer design
LG PK950 series models:

  • LG 60PK950: 60-inch, price and availability not yet known
  • LG 50PK950: 50-inch, price and availability not yet known

LG plasma claims improved black levels

The PK750 also includes THX display certification, which might appeal to people who want a quick calibration. Our experience with the PS80, however, yielded better results after tweaking LG's extensive user-menu settings as opposed to using THX mode, and unlike that mode on Panasonic plasmas, the LG's THX settings can't be adjusted at all.

LG PK750 series features:

  • TruBlack filter
  • THX certification
  • Netcast Interactive feature suite with Netflix, Vudu, Skype, Napster, YouTube, DivX, AccuWeather and Yahoo Widgets
  • DLNA compatible for music, photos and video
  • Optional "Wireless Media Hub" interface
  • Optional wi-fi connection
  • single-layer design
LG PK750 series models:

  • LG 60PK750: 60-inch, price and availability TBD
  • LG 50PK750: 50-inch, price and availability TBD

LG flagship TV's styling goes "all-picture," ultra-thin

Packed into that thin panel is the company's best feature set. The LE9500 is the only TV announced by LG so far to include 3D capability, although details were sketchy (we'll update this writeup when we find out more). Sony, Samsung and Panasonic will have LG outnumbered in the 3D TV department at the show.

LG LE9500 series features:

  • 0.33 inch bezel, 0.92 inch panel depth
  • 3D compatibility
  • 480Hz refresh rate
  • Magic Wand remote and user interface
  • Full array LED backlight with local dimming
  • THX certification
  • Netcast Interactive feature suite with Netflix, Vudu, Skype, Napster, YouTube, and Yahoo Widgets
  • DLNA compatible for music, photos and video
  • Optional "Wireless Media Hub" interface
  • Optional Wi-Fi connection
LG LE9500 series models:

  • LG Infinia 55LE9500: 55-inch, price and availability TBD
  • LG Infinia 47LE9500: 47-inch, price and availability TBD

LG local dimming LED-based LCD stays slim

These models, second from the top among LG's CES announcements after the flagship LE9500 series, offer local dimming yet still manage a cabinet depth of less than an inch (0.92 inches, to be exact). Unlike most thin LED sets, however, they're not edge-lit; they include a full array of LEDs behind the screen, and so might avoid some of the issues we've seen on edge-lit models, such as inferior uniformity. LG says that the 55-inch version has a total of 240 addressable zones, which doesn't mean much to us since other makers are mum on how many zones their local dimmers include.

LG LE8500 series features:

  • Full array LED backlight with local dimming
  • 0.92 inch panel depth
  • THX certification
  • 240Hz refresh rate
  • Netcast Interactive feature suite with Netflix, Vudu, Skype, Napster, YouTube and Yahoo Widgets
  • DLNA compatible for music, photos and video
  • Optional "Wireless Media Hub" interface
  • Optional wi-fi connection
LG LE8500 series models:

  • LG Infinia 55LE8500: 55-inch, price and availability TBD
  • LG Infinia 47LE8500: 47-inch, price and availability TBD

Thin LG LED-based LCD gives 'basic' dimming

Unlike those older Samsung sets, however, the LE7500 series incorporates what LG describes as "basic" local dimming. In this model there are 16 separately dimmable segments (regardless of screen size). Perhaps basic dimming will improve picture quality somewhat over standard edge-lighting, but we'll have to wait till we can test one to find out.

LG LE7500 series features:

  • Edge-lit LED backlight with "basic" local dimming
  • 120Hz refresh rate
  • Netcast Interactive feature suite with Netflix, Vudu, Skype, Napster, YouTube, DivX, AccuWeather, and Yahoo Widgets
  • DLNA compatible for music, photos, and video
  • Optional "Wireless Media Hub" interface
  • Optional Wi-Fi connection
LG LE7500 series models:

  • LG Infinia 55LE7500: 55-inch, price and availability TBD
  • LG Infinia 47LE7500: 47-inch, price and availability TBD
  • LG Infinia 42LE7500: 42-inch, price and availability TBD

Today LG unveiled their new line of 2010 products. There were many products announced including a new line of Infinia TVs that show off LG's direction for their 2010 offerings.

The new flagship brand of LG TVs are dubbed Infinia and boast a thin bezel, slim design, and enhanced connectivity. The models are the LE 9500, LE 8500, and LE 7500 with the 9500 being their top model. The 55in and 47in LE9500 are the first models available from LG that are 3D ready. LG also announced other LED based TVs as well as some CCFL that will presumably fill in the pricing tiers as the Infinia line will be the most expensive.

LG's 2010 TVs pack 3D, Skype, Wii-like remotes

LG also brings 480Hz and THX visuals

LG today rolled out its main TV line for 2010 and promised some of the largest feature updates in its recent memory. Kicking off the INFINIA line is the LE9500, an extra thin (0.92 inches) LED-backlit line; it includes 55-inch and 47-inch 480Hz LCD panels that should be even more adept at handling moving scenes. They're also ready for 3D sources and carry Wi-Fi for not only the new 720p Skype feature but Netflix and VUDU movie streaming, Napster, VUDU and YouTube.
Also unique is the Magic Wand, a remote that provides a Wii-like pointer for navigating the interface visually and using gestures; it can even play basic games.

Either size has local LED dimming to boost their contrast ratios and are even THX certified to have picture settings ideally tuned to watching video in areas with a significant amount of ambient light, like the average living room. It can optionally use wireless HD to get their video without cables from a supporting movie player or receiver. USB ports on these can play video in addition to photos.

The LE8500 comes at the same physical sizes but is designed as a slight step down that uses a 240Hz panel, omits 3D and has a thicker bezel.

Much of LG's mainstream is aimed at the LE7500 and LE5500 series. These come in sizes between 42 and 55 inches (for the LE7500) and 22 to 55 inches (LE5500) and still have LED local dimming as well as Internet features on all but 22- and 26-inch models. They chiefly scale back to 120Hz panels.

Finishing the LED-lit range, the LE5400 and LE5300 range between 32-60 inches (LE5400) and 19-37 inches (LE5300) still have 120Hz panels, but only the LE5400 has Internet access through Ethernet (Wi-Fi is an option). Every LE5300 set 26 inches and smaller uses a 720p picture.

Below these, the conventionally-lit displays have only some of the features. The LD650 line (47- and 55-inch models) use 240Hz panels, Internet access, USB ports with video playback and optional wireless HD. The LD550 sits between 32 and 60 inches and runs a 120Hz panel while keeping other LD650 features. LD520 models (32 to 55 inches) lack USB video and Internet access, while the LD450 tops out at 47 inches and uses an original 60Hz panel. The LD350 is LG's smallest, least expensive line and hovers between 19 and 32 inches with a 720p resolution.

LG hasn't provided ship dates or prices but usually waits until shortly before the actual release to firm up these details.
