Panasonic announces new 3D projector
20 June 2011

It’s been the best part of 18 months since we last saw a new home cinema projector from Panasonic, and despite badgering them constantly, we’ve been unable to get the brand’s press or technical people to give us even a hint about when or even if a new projector might be incoming.

Today, though, we’ve finally got at least a bit of information about the successor to the well-received PT-AE4000. And the big news is that it’s going to be a 3D model.

Actually, this is about as surprising as discovering that Dairy Milk has got milk from a dairy in it; there was just no way Panasonic wasn’t going to support its beloved active shutter 3D tech with any new serious projector. But it’s still good to have its 3D talents officially confirmed.

Yup, you're right: this is the AE4000, not the mythical new 3D model

The new projector was showcased at this year’s InfoComm 2011 show in Orlando last week (which seems a rather odd place to preview it actually, given that show’s IT rather than AV focus). Otherwise the only information we have is that the new projector was developed in collaboration with Panasonic AVC Networks’ Emotive Technology Development Centre and Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory engineers, and that it will include, according to Panasonic’s very brief press release, ‛Panasonic high picture quality and 3D original features that have been used across the rest of its 3D product lines’.

The projector will apparently launch in 2011, but we can’t be more precise than that at the moment. Panasonic hasn’t revealed any pricing information either, or photographs (hence our cunning use of a picture of the AE4000 in this story). In fact, come to think of it, we don’t even have a model number yet!

Rest assured that as soon as more information becomes available, we’ll tell you all about it.

Παρουσιάζεται σήμερα στις Η.Π.Α, κάποιες πρώτες πληροφορίες εδω:

This is the first 1080p 3-D projector to utilize LCD technology. This has been accomplished with higher refresh rate 480 Hz panels.

Contrast rating is 300,000:1, up from 100,000:1 on the AE4000.

Lumen spec has been increased from 1600 lumens on the AE4000 to 2000 lumens on the AE7000, primarily by increasing lamp wattage from 165 to 200.

This unit has all new casework--more elegant than the industrial design of previous models ;)

Many of the features of the AE4000 have been brought forward in this new model, including the 2x powered zoom lens, Lens Memory for switching from 16:9 to 2.35, frame creation (including frame creation for 3D), splitscreen calibration, wave form monitor, etc.

MSRP is $3,499, with street prices expected to be lower. Delivery in the US commences in September.

UPDATE 2: After seeing a couple of demos of the AE7000 and AE4000 side by side, my initial impression is that the AE7000 is a substantial step forward in 2D performance, and worth a premium price well above the AE4000 even if you have no interest in 3D. We won't know for sure until we see them side by side in our own test facility, but the demo staged by Panasonic was compelling.

As far as 3D is concerned, the company has concentrated on reducing cross talk, and the 3D demos showed cross talk to be minimal to non-existent. Again, we will see what we see in our own test facilities shortly. Brightness is always a big issue in 3D, and it is no different on this new model. But overall, it appears from one day of looking at it that Panasonic may have quite a substantial product in the AE7000.

Panasonic today announced the PT-AT5000E, its first Full HD 3D home theatre projector with 1080p (1,920 x 1,080 pixel) resolution. The PT-AT5000E is also the world’s first*1 3D projector to use transparent LCD panels driven at 480Hz which combined with Panasonic’s original Overdrive Technology achieves a significantly low crosstalk. The newly developed optical engine, which produces 300,000:1 contrast ratio and 2,000 lumens of brightness, enables the PT-AT5000E to offer a 2D and 3D viewing experience.

Panasonic’s home theatre projector aims to produce images that mirror the director’s artistic vision and intent. Consequently, the PT-AT5000E’s key 3D projection technologies were developed in collaboration with Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory engineers, who are heavily engaged in creation of 3D Blu-ray discs and have taken key roles in establishing the industry standards for 3D. The PT-AT5000E has been redesigned from the ground up to achieve higher basic 2D performance and unique 3D features to deliver the 3D quality demanded by Hollywood professionals.

Comfortable 3D viewing can also be adjusted by the 3D Viewing Monitor and 3D Picture Balance features. The 3D Viewing Monitor makes sure that the stereoscopic effect is within the safety zone set forth by the 3D Consortium committee as the 3D effect changes with varying screen sizes. The left and right eye images can be displayed side by side on the PT-AT5000E with individual Waveform Monitor to adjust 3D picture balance. Other 3D features include the 2D-3D Conversion, which converts 2D content into 3D images for 3D projection with five different 3D effect modes.

The projector comes equipped with a built-in 3D IR transmitter that lets the user enjoy large-screen 3D images with the same optional eyewear (Sold separately. TY-EW3D10E, TY-EW3D2LE, TY-EW3D2ME, TY-EW3D2SE) that is used for the Panasonic VIERA 3DTV, convenient for those looking to enjoy 3D in both their TV and projector. An optional IR transmitter (ET-TRM110) is also available for extended transmission distance.

The PT-AT5000E comes rich with features for those looking to customise their home cinema. Many Blu-ray discs and DVD discs come in aspects that are even wider than the projector’s 16:9 aspect ratio to match the image size (2.35:1) seen at movie theatres. The Intelligent Lens Memory feature enables users to programme up to six different zoom/focus positions. Automatic switching between 16:9 and 2.35:1 video content is also possible thanks to the signal aspect detection capability on the PT-AT5000E.

More theatre automation, such as lighting and a motorised screen, is possible with the PT-AT5000E because it comes equipped with two programmable 12-volt trigger terminals and VIERA Link®. VIERA Link® provides seamless operation of multiple VIERA Link® compatible Panasonic devices by using the PT-AT5000E remote control with backlit buttons.

The PT-AT5000E is also equipped with three HDMI™ inputs (supporting x.v.Colour™ and Deep Colour), so multiple HD sources can be connected without an HDMI switcher. Initial setup and installation are quick and easy, because the 2x zoom can cast a 120-inch diagonal image from 3.6 metres (about 11 feet) to 7 metres (24 feet) from the screen. The projector’s lens shift capability enables 100 percent vertical adjustment and 26 percent horizontal adjustment so the user can suspend the projector either close to the ceiling or mount it to a wall.

In addition to these features, the new PT-AT5000E is also an ecological product. Its intelligent power management system reduces the lamp power to the exact required level of brightness depending on the content being displayed. Advanced Panasonic digital circuitry intelligently determines the necessary power output by analysing more than 3 billion different image patterns. This advanced analysis process reduces the main power consumption by as much as 10 percent when the Dynamic Iris function is operating thus saving energy.

The Panasonic PT-AT5000E Full HD 3D home theatre projector will be available from September 2011 to authorised dealers with an MSRP of 3199.
