WHAT HI-FI TEST
LCD TECHNOLOGY HAS finally come of age, but with this TV we are beyond impressed: in fact, weΥre over the moon at how good the Sony is.
At first glance, the KDL-40W2000 is a sleek, compact and very stylish design. No surprises there, as thatΥs pretty much standard when it comes to Sony. However, there have been sets from the company over the years that were every bit as attractive, but couldnΥt match -substance to style. And we, of course, marked them down accordingly. However, this set is another matter. Featuring twin tuners Π both analogue and Freeview digital Π 1920 x 1080 resolution and two HDMI inputs, the Sony is as well equipped as anything on the market.
Get it in action, and the real fun starts. The off-air picture from the analogue tuner is the first to make a good impression: more solid and clearer than most rivalsΥ, it presents a fine balance of stability and vivid colours. And the digital TV picture is even better.
But test it with some DVDs and the true extent of the SonyΥs triumph becomes clear. We have, for the first time ever, had the experience of putting an LCD TV up against a five-star price-equivalent plasma, and found the contrast and black tones on the LCD set superior. That is a huge step forward, and one youΥd have been forgiven for believing might never happen.
The SonyΥs line definition is truly spectacular, while backgrounds and out-of-focus areas are rendered with incredible clarity and lack of on-screen noise. It takes The PropositionΥs sweeping landscapes and sun-bleached colour palette and presents it with masterful richness and control, producing deep colours while never succumbing to smearing or a lack of realism.
With high-def material, the SonyΥs performance is mesmerising. The sense of depth and realism, the combination of noiseless, sharper-than-sharp edges and sumptuous colours: it all adds up to a performance that sets new standards at this level.
