I understand the confusion regarding this issue, but it's not that strange...
Sony who's selling the Playstation had a headstart, they knew when they would introduce 1080p to the market.
With the models sold 2 years ago, handling a 1080p signal wasnt on the agenda
The way our competitors process an 1080p signal is without any picture correction what so ever. That means digital noise and artafact, and thats not the quality Philips intend to display.
That means that the picture quality can easily be wores then a 720p or worst case scenario a 576p signal, even though it's a 1080p signal.
Thats not the kind of picture quality Philips intend to show in our top models.
Pixel Plus which adjusts the signal to the selected resolution, and optimizes for digital noise and artafacts would not be able to handle the huge amount of data (300mb pr sec.)
The models were sellting today, has the Perfect Pixel HD engine, and theyre all capable of signalhandling 1080p signals.
So the TV the consumer has, is unable to handle a 1080p signal trough the HDMI cable
And is to use the setting 720p or 1080i instead.
This will result in the same picture quality, since a Playstation only will show the same line twice, in order to achieve 1080p.
Our way of doubling the signal is far more advanced.
Today 1080p isn't a problem, as our enigine Pixel Plus HD is capable of handling loads of data.
But when we produced the 9632 it was an issue.."
