Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced this week, with films that were shot using ARRI cameras dominating the top categories. The ARRI ALEXA digital camera has made a profound impact after its first full year in the industry; it was used to shoot four of the nominated films -- EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE, DRIVE, ANONYMOUS and HUGO, which leads the Oscars field with a staggering 11 nominations.
Close behind HUGO with 10 nominations is THE ARTIST, a masterful piece of visual storytelling that was filmed with the ubiquitous ARRIFLEX 435. Meanwhile WAR HORSE and THE TREE OF LIFE are perfect examples of the spellbinding images that can be created by combining the ARRICAM 35 mm system with ARRI/Zeiss Master Prime lenses.
The nominations as a whole reflect the mix of 35 mm and digital acquisition being utilized at the highest levels of the film industry. While ARRI projects are in evidence across all categories, two that might be seen as being particularly relevant to the camera industry are Best Picture and Best Cinematography, the nominations for which are detailed below.
Best Picture
Two-thirds of the films nominated in this category were shot with ARRI cameras, four of them on 35 mm film and two with ALEXA.
