Crystal Audio unveiled the prototype for its new Dipole Series at an exclusive recent event held in Athens, where the company has its Research & Development headquarters. The Dipole 21 will form the basis of a new three-strong dipole range to be launched at IFA 2006.

The new Dipole 21 loudspeaker is a true four-way design that incorporates a unique combination of a 12 inch mid/bass driver allied to a massive 21 inch woofer, specifically designed for bipolar radiation without a cabinet. The 21 inch (53cm) woofer is the biggest driver ever used in a hi-fi loudspeaker.

Yet as this is a dipole system, and therefore shuns the use of a cabinet, the woofer’s immense size in no way dominates. In fact, as all the loudspeaker cables are concealed within the thick baffle, the styling ties up perfectly with any modern room.

The stereo pair will have a catoptrical symmetry when it is released at IFA, which will also see the unveiling of the other two models in the range. Finally, the Dipole 21 will sport a special dipole tweeter for better sound dispersion.

Got dipole?

Dipole loudspeakers offer significant advantages over conventional loudspeakers. Conventional, box-type loudspeakers suffer from serious problems caused by unwanted cabinet resonances and internal standing waves. However, with dipole designs there is none of the irregular and booming low frequencies of a typical box speaker.

Moreover, dipole loudspeakers exhibit a figure-of-eight polar response as opposed to the omni-directional radiation pattern of conventional speakers. So, they cause weaker early reflections, resulting in a smoother in-room frequency response and a more precise imaging.

A final advantage of dipole loudspeakers is related to their strong, full-range back radiation. This radiation is reflected on the rear wall and arrives at the listener with considerable delay relative to the direct front radiation. The psychoacoustic effect of this late arrival is to increase the depth and spaciousness of the projected stereo image.

Back to the future

The premiere of the Dipole 21 prototype loudspeaker took place in Athens, where Crystal Audio has it headquarters. Key magazine journalists from around Europe were present at Ihodomi Hi-Fi, the country’s leading high-end hi-fi and home cinema dealer to see Dipole 21 unveiled. The designs were perfectly at home in the exalted company of other flagship designs from leading speaker marques such as Focal.JMLab, Martin Logan, B&W, and Dynaudio.

And there was more than just the demonstration for the journalists to enjoy, as they took in not only an exclusive viewing of Crystal Audio’s ‘Sound of Art’ series at a leading art gallery, but also a cultural tour of Athens which focused on the Greece’s acoustic heritage including a visit to the wonderful Odeon of Herod of Attica.

Πρόκειται για πολύ σοβαρή εταιρεία, βασισμένη σε μια ομάδα απο νέους μηχανικούς. Είχα την χαρά να συνεργαστώ μαζί τους στο παρελθόν, σ'ενα project για ηχεία πάνω από 802.11b(WiFi), και μου άφησαν τις καλύτερες εντυπώσεις. Τα Prisma, που λέει ο Διονύσης, είναι ίσως ενα απο τα καλύτερα ηχεία τους, πλέον ομως δεν κυκλοφορούν.

Από τα ηχεία τους εχω ακούσει τα THX-T3 και τα μικρότερα TX-FS. Στις κατηγορίες τους πραγματικά δεν εχουν να ζηλέψουν τιποτα απο αντίστοιχα ηχεία ευρωπαϊκών εταιρειών.
