LG's 2020 OLED TVs to have edge displays, reveals patent
The 6 patents were published in the WIPO (Worldd Intellectual Property Office) database on 8 October 2019 and all show a television with a rounded screen.
The way in which the screen is rounded off varies per patent. With all six designs, the TV screen is rounded on two sides: above & below or left & right. We briefly explain the different models.
Model 1: This television has a fairly wide screen border on the left and right, which runs round at the top and bottom. The screen itself extends over the top and bottom to the edge. For this design, a fairly gentle curve has been chosen.
Model 2: This design shows many similarities with model 1. However, with this design it has been decided to implement an edge display on both sides - instead of on the top and bottom.
Model 3: This design has narrow frame edges, with straight, symmetrical lines. The screen runs through the top and bottom, through a 90-degree bend. With smartphones this is also called a 'waterfall display'.
Model 4: This model shows many similarities with model 3. However, this LG OLED TV has a rounded display on the sides, instead of the top and bottom.
Model 5: With this design, blunt corners have been chosen, so that the screen does not have to be bent 90 degrees, but only around 40 to 45 degrees. The top and bottom of the screen is rounded.
Model 6: This model again shows many similarities with model 5. However, the edge display can be found on the sides instead of on the top and bottom.
