Good Morning Argi,
Besieged by loss after loss in the format war, HD-DVD
developer Toshiba has conceded defeat to Blu-Ray Disc
backer Sony this morning. While this narrows options for
consumers, Toshiba president Nishida indicated in a
statement that Toshiba's feeling was that a quick
decision would be best for all concerned and that he felt
they "simply had no chance to win" the format war. Now
all concerned can get behind the Blu-Ray format and consumers
who've been sitting on the sidelines to wait out the
carnage can actually buy something.
Recently the HD-DVD camp had been hurt badly by
announcement after announcement that former HD-DVD
supporters would be dropping or deemphasizing HD-DVD and
going with Blu-Ray instead. The beginning of the end came
last month when Warner Brothers studios, one of the last
major movie studios still backing the HD-DVD format,
announced they'd cease their support by summer. This was
followed by retail king Wal-Mart, consumer electronics king
Best Buy, and mail order leader NetFlix all announcing
that
they would transition to BluRay only.
The loss of support from both the content providers and
retailers was simply more than the HD-DVD format could
sustain. About 950 movies are available in HD-DVD, the most
recent being the award winning motion picture American
Gangster, that was just released exclusively in the HD-DVD
format. It remains to be seen how long before that and
other HD-DVD exclusive releases will be available in the
Blu-Ray format.
Please forward this to anyone you think may benefit from it
and stay tuned for the regular newsletter.
