2. The Tuning
First we provided entrance to the service menu, in order to receive as details and many adjustment possibilities ones as possible. This is connected by our close co-operation with Sony with no warranty loss! Handling the service menu is however not recommended to the layman, why we do not publish the entrance here.
Service the menu offers its own column for the white alignment, similarly as in the normal picture menu, but with substantially more adjusting steps. Each basic colour can be regulated here within a range from 0 to approx. 180. It is noticeable directly that the basic colours are apparent not used completely. This is first no surprise, since it concerns with the VP-VW50 a conventional UHP lamp projector. UHP lamps show a clear lack of red in their native color characteristic opposite blue and green. For this reason green and blue are down-throttled digitally on the red level.
Surprisingly is it however that in on 6500K/D65 co-ordinated factory setting the Rotpotenzial is not used. In other words: All color levels are clearly under their limit. Thus considerable light reserves are given away.
These reserves can be activated and used in the service menu of the VPL-VW50 problem-free. Debei applies it however to achieve the optimal point before the colors override or the color uniformity in the picture is impaired. We increased the utilization of light, but likewise kept a small reserve clearance.
However by this better light use the maximum Bildhelliglkeit increases over over 20% with correct colors. In factory setting “Low” reached our standard set after an actual working time of approx. 100 hours a light achievement of maximally approx. 520 lumens with correct colors, after this “Tweaking” from approx. 650Lumen. Also the contrast increases logically by approx. 20%.
More maximumbrightness is always good, but did not hand us yet. It would be nevertheless still better, if to the increased brightness at the same time also still the Schwarzwert is improved. Therefore we decrease/go back a step and to increase all basic colours toward its limit (security reserve again considers). Fast the typical UHP behavior of the projector shows up: Green and blue exceeds the maximum red level by far.
Under use of the lamp spectrum the maximum Kontrastverhälntnis increases again considerably: 17000:1 to even over 20000:1 (minimum zoom shot) achieves the projector here, the conservative factory specifications is even clearly exceeded. The negative side effect is however one clear to cool image representation. The natural colour is not ensured no more, on utilization of the maximum contrast becomes it clearly too coolly. A lack of red of 40% adjusts itself, so that a akkurate picture reproduction is not possible.
In above example pictures the Verfremdungen is to be recognized clearly: By the too cool color representation the landscape loses its naturalness to recognize particularly in the sky and by the trees.
Here one does not get ahead with the bare changing of the settings. If one corrects the colors, one loses inevitably the contrast. In addition we wanted to improve the Schwarzwert, what is not possible without optical aids. It is obvious to adjust the colors by an optical filtering. In addition we use the new C4H Innovate Tuning filter from particularly recompensed glass. The measured spectrum makes a special red/blue filter necessary, a kind for “pink eyeglasses”. With the help of this special glass filter it is possible to down-filter the native lamp light on the limiting color red. The trick thereby: The filter is always in the optical path and improved in dark ranges our Schwarzwert:
The black level is on the left of (with glass filter) better than right (without glass filters).
With same maximum white thus the contrast increases.
Thus our Schwarzwert is improved, to particularly dark scenes of it clearly clearly profits. In the next step now the color temperature of all gray tones must be adapted on the filter.
Example: Colour tone after contrast optimization
The outstanding picture parameters of the Sony menu help us also here much. The VW50 can be adjusted to the necessary 6500K/D65 as exactly, as hardly another digital projector. The desired value of 6500K in neutral gray tones is repaired:
The gamma distribution of the projector remains invariably exemplary. Their rise is adaptable by 2,2 (out) to 2.4 (Gamma3) variable on the area. The Durchzeichnung remains outstanding, before the improved Schwarzwert fine nuances is still more precisely worked out.
The results of the Tunings become clearly apparent in the picture: First the balanced color representation would be to be mentioned here, which comes the reconstruction of the cinema original to property.
Stimmige colors and brightness by measuring
These results are possible also with a conventional calibration. The additional use of the glass filter permits however a further improvement of the Schwarzwertes, without losses in the Maximalhelliglkeit being received (due to the Oberflächenvergütung of the glass). On the contrary: Despite filters the projector won approximately 20% brightness by the Tuning in relation to factory setting!
If dark scenes work spatially more deeply and more reliably, brightens scenes still more naturally, more radiating!
After the complete Tuning we measure a maximum contrast relationship of over 17000:1, are reached this contrast value with the help of the variable iris screen. It is still disconnectible. With switched off screen nevertheless still another contrast relationship of approx. 2900:1 (iris openly) to 6000:1 (iris closed) remains with our test equipment. However these are already outstanding values, which hardly a home cinema projector at the market at present creates.
Test results of measurement after our Tuning
Maximum zoom shot (minimum zoom shot)
Mode Light (Eco)/lumen Light (rear one)/lumen Contrast
Iris openly 430 (340) 670 (550) 2900:1
Iris firmly variable variable up to 5000:1
(6000:1)
Iris adaptive 430 (340) 670 (550) 17000:1
(> 20000:1)
With the C4H Tuning has the user the following advantages in relation to normal factory setting:
- Maximum contrast from 17000:1 to >20000: 1 (zoom shot minimum) with adaptive screen
- High contrast also completely without adaptive screen, up to 6000:1
- Akkurate colors
- Clear improved Schwarzwert
- approx. 20% more brightness
The projector profits by it within many ranges: The Schwarzwert becomes darker, the maximum brightness rises and the color representation is still more exact, than ex factory. With this performance Sony VPL-VW50 at present a class for itself is in this price category.
