News for Windows Tablets

With the big players now on Broadwell, all eyes turn to Surface Pro 4

HP Spectre x360 review: What happens when Microsoft helps build a laptop?

http://www.engadget.com/2015/04/03/hp-spectre-x360-review/

Pros
•Attractive, well-made design
•Long battery life
•Colorful screen, good viewing angles
•Comfortable keyboard
•Fast performance
•Reasonably priced

Cons
•A bit heavy for a 13-inch laptop, even one with a convertible design
•Relative heaviness makes it less practical to use as a tablet
•Touchpad offers a bit too much friction

Summary

The Spectre x360 is one of our new favorite laptops, thanks to its premium design, fast performance, vibrant screen and comfortable keyboard. It's relatively heavy compared to competing laptops, but it mostly makes up for it with nearly best-in-class battery life.

"According to unconfirmed reports, Intel may have been able to cram its Iris graphics into the 15W ULV SKUs of Skylake, Intel's next generation processor. Iris graphics is currently only available on 28W Broadwell chips."

The first Skylake chip is expected to be Core M, designed to be used in Windows as well as Android tablets and hybrids.

The first Skylake PCs are expected to be available in the second half this year. Dell, for example, has said it will launch Skylake laptops in that time frame. Intel’s chips are used by most PC makers.

Intel is expecting big graphics performance improvements, longer laptop battery life, and better CPU performance with the new chips. Skylake will also allow users to wirelessly charge laptops, connect to monitors, and transfer data to peripherals

Verdict

In review: Dell Venue 10. Test model provided by Dell

The Dell Venue 10 Pro 5055 with keyboard is a well-built mobile Windows 8.1 2-in-1 PC but it comes to the market at a time when Intel Atom is going through a branding and performance change that could affect the way customer perceives the 'old' Baytrail-T generation of devices. Dell have chosen not to implement the high-end Z3795 that would have enabled a 64-bit OS and higher processing power that would have made it more comparable to the competing Microsoft Surface 3. As it stands, the Microsoft Surface 3 is more powerful all-round.

The keyboard is good for the size and the tablet tends towards being solid and rugged rather than the thinnest and lightest. Consider the pen option, disk encryption, BIOS security options and impressive screen brightness though and you've got a device that is well suited to some on-the-road business activities along with some industrial scenarios. Micro USB charging (in-auto, for example) is also an advantage although it isn't a quick process. The hardware is well suited to students but unfortunately it's missing the required CPU and GPU processing power to cover all scenarios without issues.

The keyboard experience is likely to be better for most people on the Dell Venue 10 Pro than on the Surface 3

We weren't able to directly compare it with a Surface 3 side-by-side but our test results show lower performance and higher weight. The keyboard experience is likely to be better for most people on the Dell Venue 10 Pro than on the Surface 3. It beats the Lenovo Miix 2 10 for keyboard experience too although this product, launched in 2013, has just as much processing power. It again indicates that Baytrail-T is nearing the end of its life and Dell need to address this with an Xtom X5 or Atom X7 refresh as soon as possible. When that's done, the Dell Venue 10 Pro could becomes an extremely interesting competitor in the productive 2-in-1 space. For the time being though the Dell Venue 10 Pro 5055 is something that could interest specific vertical market applications more than consumers

Lenovo’s new ThinkPad 10 tablet powered by Intel Atom Cherry Trail chips

Like other members of the ThinkPad family, this tablet is aimed at business customers, but it should be available for anyone willing to pay a premium price for a tablet designed for the enterprise market.

Optional features included 3G or 4G cellular data, dTPM encryption, a smart card reader or fingerprint scanner, and optional anti-glare screen.

Lenovo will offer a range of optional accessories including a $110 Folio Keyboard, a $119 Ultrabook keyboard, a $129 tablet dock, and a $40 ThinkPad Pen Pro

There’s also a $45 QuickShot Cover, which lets you fire up the camera just by folding down a flap over the lens.

The new Lenovo Thinkpad 10 supports 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and has micro HDMI, microSD, and USB 3.0 ports, a 32 Wh battery for up to 10 hours of run time, and 5MP rear and 1.2MP front cameras. The tablet measures 10.1β€³ x 7β€³ x 0.35β€³ and weighs about 1.4 pounds.

Closer look at Acer Aspire Switch 10 V Cherry Trail 2-in-1 tablet
http://liliputing.com/2015/06/closer-look-at-acer-aspire-switch-10-v-cherry-trail-2-in-1-tablet.html

The new Acer Aspire Switch 10 V is a 2-in-1 Windows tablet with a detachable keyboard base. It looks a lot like earlier Switch 10 models, but the new version has a few major improvements, including:
β€’10.1 inch, 1920 x 1200 pixel display
β€’Intel Atom X5-8300 Cherry Trail processor
β€’A USB 3.0 port on the keyboard dock

The demo unit spotted by Mobile Geeks features 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, but it’s possible Acer will offer models with more memory and storage for higher prices.

Other features include a micro USB port, micro HDMI port, headset jack, and microSD card slot on the side of the tablet itself. There are front-facing stereo speakers, and front and rear cameras.

Unlike some other tablets on display at Computex this week, the Acer Aspire Switch 10 V does not have a USB-C connector.

HP updates Pavilion x2 10 inch 2-in-1 with Cherry Trail
http://liliputing.com/2015/06/hp-updates-pavilion-x2-10-inch-2-in-1-with-cherry-trail.html

The tablet looks a lot like last year’s model, but the keyboard has been improved. Instead of a keyboard case, the 2015 model comes with a keyboard dock which has a sturdy base, which should make it easier to use the 2-in-1 device like a laptop when it’s actually sitting on your lap. The dock has a magnetic docking mechanism

Mobile Geeks notes that the keyboard is very thin and has no ports. But it helps keep the weight of the entire setup low: the tablet and keyboard have a combined weight of about 1.8 pounds.

The new tablet is powered by an Intel Atom x7 processor and the demo unit features 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. HP says the tablet should get up to 12 hours of battery life.

Other features include a USB 3.0 port, a USB type C port, micro HDMI port, and a microSD card reader. There are stereo speakers and dual microphones.

The USB-C port can be used for data transfer, but it’s also the tablet’s charging port.

Asus Transformer Book Flip TP200: Braswell-powered convertible
http://liliputing.com/2015/06/asus-transformer-book-flip-tp200-braswell-powered-convertible

The laptop features an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel glossy IPS touchscreen display, an Intel Pentium N3700 Braswell processor, and a relatively compact design: it measures about 0.73 inches thick and weighs about 2.65 pounds.

It also has a fanless design, thanks in part to the low-power 6 watt processor which doesn’t generate much heat.

The Transformer Book Flip TP200 will be available with up to 4GB of RAM and 128GB of solid state storage, but entry-level models will have just 2GB and 32GB, respectively.

Around the sides of the laptop you’ll find a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 port, and a USB-C connector, as well as a separate charging port. There are power and volume buttons on the side of the laptop, allowing you to press those buttons even when you’re holding the computer in tablet mode. There’s also a microSD card reader and micro HDMI port.

Microsoft and Toshiba haven’t shared many details about the Astrea yet, but the folks at Mobile Geeks spotted an unnamed Toshiba convertible on display at Computex… and it certainly looks like this could be the same computer mentioned by the Microsoft blog.

The 2-in-1 computer features a 13.3 inch, 3840 x 2160 pixel UPS touchscreen display, up to 8GB of RAM, and a 2.3 GHz Skylake processor.

It has an Intel RealSense 3D camera, SD card slot, HDMI port, two full-sized USB ports, and a USB-C connector.
