Samsung slaps "production-ready" label on 14.1- and 31-inch OLED TVs

Samsung's been kicking around its 14.1- and 31-inch OLED TVs since CES 2008, but it seems as if things are turning for the better at SID this week. In a press release outed today, Sammy told the world that it's exhibiting "production-ready" AMOLED TV sets, though the sizes are the same as the ones we've seen before. The 31-incher really has our attention, with it being the planet's first OLED with a Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) display, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, a color gamut of over 100 percent NTSC and an 8.9 millimeter slim enclosure. So, when does "production-ready" morph into "in production?" Bueller?

:p :flipout:

LG Display Co Ltd of Korea exhibited a 15-inch OLED panel at SID Display Week 2009. To highlight its toughness, the company showed a demonstration video of the panel being hammered with a mallet.

The OLED panel has a thin profile, measuring only 347.94 x 209.80 x 0.85mm. It has 1,366 x RGB x 768 pixels with a resolution of 105 pixels per inch (ppi). The average luminance is 200cd/m2, and the contrast ratio is 100,000:1. The frame frequency is 120Hz.

What surprised visitors most is that the panel was repeatedly being hit with a mallet in the demonstration movie.

"We formed an OLED layer on a glass substrate and provided a steel sheet on its back side and a resin sealing layer on the front, making the panel durable to shock," LG Display said.

LG 15in OLED Photos Teased

Sure, LG's 15in OLED is likely to be ludicrously expensive when it goes on sale in December, but as some new pictures pushed onto LG's Flickr photostream hint at why. Just look at it!
The design is fairly similar to the Sony XEL-1, with the screen and tuner parts of the TV separated into discreet sections, though still attached to each other. However, the behind-the-screen mounting position means that LG's OLED TV can be wall-mounted, something not possible with the XEL-1.

The design also means that the LG OLED will take better advantage of the thinness of its display technology, with an impressively small footprint. And, if pictures can be believed, the screen is going to be impressively bright and vivid. Based on our experience of OLED TVs to date, that's only to be expected.
LG still hasn't confirmed when, or even if, this TV will be sold in the UK, but with larger screens not arriving from LG until 2012 we certainly hope this one will!

Samsung confirms 5.5G OLED plant, larger OLEDs

A 5.5G OLED plant operates with 1,300 x 1,500mm substrates. Samsung says that they will primarily focus on small size OLED panels for mobile devices on the new plant but the much larger substrates definitely also allows Samsung to manufacture monitor OLED panels and OLED panels for small to medium size OLED-TVs.
