The Panasonic TX-P42ST60 is another outstanding plasma TV which produces lush, vibrant image quality in normal living room and home cinema environments. For passive movie and television viewing, it doesn’t deviate from the winning formula of 2012′s ST50 series, and in fact improves on it by delivering even better contrast performance, with black depth that’s better still. Impressively neutral colours are present in the out-of-the-box “True Cinema” mode, and a worthwhile increase in accuracy is attainable if you have your ST60 calibrated using the extensive indepth setup controls. The 42ST60 also does away with one of the very mild video processing foibles we pointed out last year, and also now offers expert calibrators more control over the picture quality, for users who want to have their ST60s fine-tuned (which we absolutely recommend for an HDTV of this quality – it deserves it). Colour accuracy was statistically a small step back from last year’s ST50, but not to a visible extent.

If you won’t be interacting with the TV at high speed during intensive competitive fast-paced video game use – that is, if you’re using it for the admittedly more typical television and movie use – then we can’t recommend it enough (if you’re gaming on it, it’s far from a “no go”, but if you’re as sensitive to input lag as we are, you’ll be better served by slightly speedier displays).

Install a Panasonic TX-P42ST60B in a moderately lit, or better yet, dedicated room, and you’ll be rewarded with one of the best HD television-sized experiences you can buy at any price level – the fact that it’s on sale for £900 is a cause for celebration. The revamped Smart TV interface (“My Home Screen”) is neat, and the Touch Pen feature is genuinely fun to use, although it remains to be seen if the novelty will hold for home users (using a plasma screen as a giant whiteboard sounds more like a business feature to us).

We’re now more eager than ever to check out the higher-up GT60, VT60/VT65 and of course, the zenith ZT60/ZT65 series, as well as Samsung’s 2013 plasmas, but they’re going to have their work cut out for them to significantly improve on this in terms of picture quality. But Panasonic, please watch that input lag!

Απολύτως προβλέψιμο το review της ST60, στα όρια της πλήξης θα έλεγα.
Εν αναμονή των άλλων μοντέλων για τυχόν βελτιώσεις όπως λέει και ο reviewer Mackenzie, που αντί να εορτάζει το Πάσχα, έκατσε και έγραψε review.:beatnik2:
Σατανικό το κόλπο της Panasonic με τη χειροτέρεψη του input lag.
Σου λέει: "τους βάζω input lag, θα παίζουν λιγότερα παιχνίδια, άρα λιγότερο ρετέσιο*, άρα λιγότερα παράπονα:idea:!".
* Ρετέσιο= image retension.

απο οτι θυμαμαι η περσινη σειρα ST50 δεν ειχε το Full 4:4:4 reproduction (PC)

Κοίτα να δεις τώρα. Βγάζει κάποιος ένα ριβιού και το παίρνει ο καθένας και το μεταφράζει όπως θέλει. Σωστά? Σωστά. Άλλος λέει μια από τα ίδια η πανασόνικ και φέτος, άλλος ναι, αλλά υπάρχει και αυτό το επιπλέον χαρακτηριστικό. Η δική μου λοιπόν μετάφραση είναι η εξής. Απ' ότι προκύπτει από το ριβιού, υπάρχει πρόοδος σε ένα βασικό στοιχείο φέτος σε σχέση με πέρσι. Η st50 αμφιβάλω αν βγάζει στο true cinema 120cm/m2, γι' αυτό και κάποιοι, αμερικάνοι κυρίως, καλιμπράτορες την καλιμπράρανε στο custom που δεν είχε κόφτη στη φωτεινότητα. Η φετινή st60 βγάζει 163cm/m2!!! στο true cinema, όσα δηλαδή βγάζει η st50 μόνο στο standard mode. Αν αυτό είναι πραγματικότητα από μόνο του συνιστά μεγάλη πρόοδο. Τώρα αναφορικά με το μεγαλύτερο input lag, i'm sorry που λέει και ο Κίτσος, αλλά για gaming είναι οι οι lcd, διότι ως γνωστόν οι πλάσμα είναι τηλεοράσεις και οι lcd μόνιτορ, εκτός κ'αν άλλαξε και αυτό μαζί με όλα τα υπόλοιπα.
 
Αφού σταμάτησε η Panasonic το R&D στις πλάσμα μην περιμένετε και πολλές βελτιώσεις στα μοντέλα του 2013. Κάποιες διορθωτικές κινήσεις ίσως να έγιναν.

H αλήθεια είναι ότι η βελτίωση στην αντίθεση φαίνεται να είναι πολύ σημαντική, να ξεπερνά την κούρο, και να αφήνει πίσω τις πλάσμα της samsung για ακόμα μια φορά.
Και αυτό σε μια προσιτή τηλεόραση, χαμηλά στην κλίμακα των μοντέλων.

Το νήμα για τα μοντέλα της Panasonic του 2013 υπάρχει για τις πληροφορίες που βρίσκουμε σχετικά με τα μοντέλα του 2013.

Αν υπάρχουν πληροφορίες, review κ.λπ. για αυτά τις/τα καταθέτουμε και τις/τα συζητάμε κι από τον Μάρτη που θα κυκλοφορήσουν, όλο και κάποιο νήμα κατόχου θα ανοίξει στην άλλη κατηγορία για να συζητήσουμε ξεχωριστά για κάθε μοντέλο.

Για τα υπόλοιπα υπάρχουν ήδη ανοιγμένα θέματα στα οποία μπορούμε να καταθέσουμε απόψεις και πληροφορίες κι αν δεν υπάρχουν μπορούμε να ανοίξουμε.

Ήδη έχουμε φτάσει τις 7 σελίδες με πλειοψηφία τα άσχετα μηνύματα, τις προφητείες και γενικότερο trolling, τέτοια μηνύματα δεν υπάρχει κανένα νόημα να υπάρχουν εδώ.

Αυτό που απουσιάζει από την st60 είναι η δυνατότητα εγγραφής σε σκληρό δίσκο, κάτι που υπάρχει στην st50 όπως και το φωτιζόμενο τηλεκοντρόλ. Αν ισχύει πάντως το νούμερο του hdtvtest για την μέγιστη φωτεινότητα σε true cinema mode, αυτό αποτελεί σημαντική βελτίωση και μάλιστα χωρίς τυμπανοκορουσίες.
 
There’s some good news at last for Panasonic fans, after the Japanese company put an end to speculation that it may shut down its TV business, saying that it would only exit the industry as an absolute “last resort”.


Fans of Panasonic’s line of smart TVs – especially its plasma TVs, which are considered to be among the best in the business – will be mightily relieved at the news, after it was widely reported that the company would shut down its TV manufacturing arm as part of a massive restructuring designed to put a an end to its dismal financial results. The firm is expected to announce a loss of some £5.3 billion for the last year when it publishes its results later this month.

Panasonic has been bleeding cash for the last three years, yet the company announced in a press release last weekend that it’s finally hoping to return to profitability by March 2014, with tentative projection of £349 million in revenues. The company, which has spent the last 12 months eliminating its worst-performing businesses and laying off thousands of workers, further projected a £2.4 billion profit by March 2015.

When quizzed about the decision to keep making TVs, Panasonic president Kazuhiro Tsuga admitted that there was still a “possibility” it might get out of the industry, although only if all else fails.

“We will leave the TV industry as a last resort only,” said Tsuga over the weekend. “We cannot dismiss the possibility, but we will try to avoid it.”

This statement comes following last week’s report that Panasonic was planning to dump plasma TV as part of its plans to scale down its larger TV business. Japan’s TV manufacturers have found the going tough in recent years with the global economic crisis leading to consumers across the world tightening up the purse strings. Things haven’t been helped by the relatively strong yen either, nor the tough competition from South Korean manufacturers LG and Samsung (the world’s top two biggest TV makers), as well as a multitude of lower-cost Chinese brands.

Recently however, the yen has suffered a sharp drop in its value compared to the US dollar, helping Panasonic to boost its overseas earnings. From October to December, Panasonic reported that its foreign revenues increased by some £21 million solely due to the more favourable exchange rate.

Την καλή του την κουβέντα την είπε και ο αμερικάνος καλιμπράτορας chad b : The ST60 does seem to be a significant advance over the ST/GT50; it's contrast measuring better than anything I have obtained with those models, and more detailed calibration adjustments allowing for more refinement and flexibility. I loved the GT50 so much last year that I did something I had not done before and have not done since: I bought one for my own living room shortly after finishing the review. I do believe Panasonic has succeeded in making an outstanding bang for the buck performer significantly better. Please, please don't give up on plasma, Panasonic! Οι καλύτεροι reviewers είναι οι αγοραστές, εδικά αυτοί που δε φοράνε τα γυαλιά του fanboy.

Panasonic TX-P50GT60B Plasma 3D TV Review

If this is what the Panasonic GT60 is like, then it begs the question, what’s left for the two higher-up models? Of course, we’re playing devil’s advocate with that question: internet rumblings and the demonstrations we’ve seen of prototypes promise black levels that are better still, and also better anti-reflective screen coatings to keep the picture appearing that bit more vibrant in bright rooms.

However, let’s put comparisons aside… the TX-P50GT60 is a phenomenally excellent HDTV. It excels in every area we can think of (bar the quality of its built-in sound, which is the usual as-expected fine-for-casual-viewing flat-screen TV fare). Its black level depth is some of the deepest we’ve ever seen and measured, and this time, it does not come at the expense of overall brightness or other aspects of picture quality. Contrast performance on both ends of the scale is stunning. LED LCD TVs can manage an incredibly bright image, but the Panasonic TX-P50GT60B is in the contrast sweet spot, with a great level of brightness and customisation to a wide variety of room environments thanks to the uncapped [Contrast] control.

The attempt at naturally coloured video before calibration (that is, in the THX and pre-calibrated Professional picture modes) is good, albeit not the best we’ve seen. We absolutely recommend you find an ISF/THX calibrator to take advantage of the fully-fledged calibration controls Panasonic has built in, though, because the resulting neutrality and picture “depth” is a worthwhile improvement on the very good starting point.

Gamers are covered as well, with almost no input lag worth worrying about in the Game Mode – which is a huge relief after the slower-than-usual ST60 plasma we reviewed last week. 60fps games are a total joy to play on the TXP50GT60 thanks to the ultra-high motion resolution and freedom from noticeable lag.

It’s also loaded with Smart TV features, which are more usable than in years past thanks to their responsiveness. The “My Home Screen” is great to use thanks to its snappy navigation and clean design too, and we think is on par with Samsung’s excellent Smart TV system (although we’re still impressed by the Korean giant’s method of controlling external set-top boxes from pay TV providers via the television itself).

The use of Plasma display technology – specifically Panasonic’s NeoPlasma technology – puts it a healthy distance in front of the competition, most of which is LED LCD. LCD-based HDTVs are far from bad, and we always recommend them over plasma for very bright environments, but we feel plasma’s inherent strengths and weaknesses are a better match for most normal rooms. Unless you’re watching in a room full of very bright sunlight, the Viera GT60 is blatantly better than the majority of displays in this price range, which are using LED LCD technology. It’s just a shame that the biggest size it comes in here is 50″ – hardly small, but who could say no to more of the same? (The only 65in Panasonic Plasma coming to the UK is the TX-P65VT65B, which should be even better still, but at a different price point, naturally). In short, it’s difficult to imagine anything at this price point, and even above it, significantly bettering the picture quality.

So, here comes the “Reference Level” rating, which is a heavy statement to make in itself. Readers shouldn’t take this rating to mean that the TX-P50GT60B is a flawless product, but one that we feel has no significant disadvantages and one which we don’t feel Panasonic’s engineers could have done a better job on, at least not without serious re-tooling. We assign this rating taking the 2D display mode into mind; 3D quality on all plasma TVs is visibly less than 2D, in various ways.

If you, for whatever reason, don’t like the panel driving algorithm inherent to Panasonic Plasmas, the GT60 is not going to change your mind. It’s still a plasma display, it still has dither, and yes, it will still make a small audible sound when you have bright content on screen, but in our opinion, getting too concerned with these small issues would be to miss the forest for the trees.

What’s interesting is that the VT60/VT65, and especially the ZT60/ZT65, are logically expected to be better still, so unless something goes wrong (very unlikely, but not impossible), these are logically also going to satisfy our conditions for Reference Level ratings. Knowing that, isn’t it strange to assign this rating if we know that something technically better is coming?

We don’t think so. The fact that we’ve gone from Panasonic having mostly “Highly Recommended” plasma products in 2012 to the possibility of no less than three “Reference Level” ratings this year says more about the quality of the GT60 and Panasonic’s addressing of feedback than anything else. In our opinion, denying this rating to an HDTV of the TX-P50GT60′s quality would just be shifting the goal posts for arbitrary reasons. Or, put another way: we know that the VT and ZT are 99% certain to be even better, but the GT should not be penalised for completely satisfying us just because it isn’t the most expensive product.

It has basically every single base covered. The picture quality is sublime, it’s chock-full of Smart TV features, it’s loaded with HD satellite and terrestrial tuners and recording functionality, and it’s a fantastic gaming display. It’s bright when it needs to be bright and jet-black when it needs to be dark; its colour can be accurate and natural. Go check one out in a suitably-lit environment – we think you’ll be as impressed as we were. More than ever, we can’t wait to see what’s in store higher up the Viera plasma ladder, but we imagine the TX-P50GT60B is going to stay in the price-performance sweet spot.
