On paper Sony XD85 is the successor to last year’s top-seller X85C but in reality it is a much different TV. Sony has switched from a VA LCD panel in last year’s set to an IPS LCD panel in XD85, and it has obvious consequences. First and foremost, it means that Sony has sacrificed black levels for wider viewing angles.
Is that a good compromise? It depends on your habits. If you mostly watch TV during daytime or in a brightly lit room you will likely not be bothered much by the weak black levels, but if you mostly watch TV in the evening hours of the day you will surely notice that the picture lacks contrast and depth. On the other hand, the wide viewing angles are optimal for living rooms with multiple seating positions.
However, as a full package we think that picture quality is a clear downgrade compared to the predecessor. That is true even when you consider other factors such the expanded color gamut and support for HDR, which is a claim at best. To us, XD85 has little to do with HDR (high dynamic range) and if HDR is on your wish list you should seriously consider buying a full-array local dimming LCD TV instead – or better yet an OLED TV. XD93 is also a significantly better TV. XD85 is not a bad TV and its motion reproduction and relatively low input lag should be praised but the TV market is a competitive arena.
Android TV on the other hand has gotten better. Not because of faster hardware, because Sony has chosen to use the exact same chip, but because of software optimizations by Google. Built-in Chromecast is great and you can even use it when the TV is off. However, Android TV still has some ground to cover.
We had hoped that Sony would improve the 8 series through iteration. It could have become something great. Instead the company has created something entirely different. It feels a little too random. If you want a Sony TV we would recommend that you seriously consider buying XD93 instead – maybe that is exactly what Sony had in mind.

Conclusion
To summarize, the Sony XD85 is clearly a fact TV for the general public, for families, for those who watch their TV in lit room or in the day. Under these conditions, the low contrast of this TV does not really noticed, if at all by activating the ACE. All that we see is a vibrant, beautiful picture, precise and exceptionally smooth, with truly beautiful and vibrant colors.
Indeed, despite a very limited coverage Rec.2020, the XD85 offers one of the best colorimetric market through its IPS panel and its algorithm Triluminos remastered colors in Wide Gamut very effectively maintaining a natural. Only the DX900 who offered me a better colorimetry thanks to its LED red phosphorus that help provide intense red that IPS while retaining the advantages of a VA panel. In addition, Sony XD85 offers colorimetry very fair cardboard output and angles very open visions that allow the whole family to enjoy a good image regardless of his place on the couch.
However, this TV is clearly not recommended for those who watch their movies in dark room. Besides, if you watch your movies in darkened room, there is absolutely no reason to buy the XD85, since the X85C offers exactly the same functionality, but with a VA panel and a very good contrast. True, the colors will be slightly less beautiful but dark room contrast is still paramount.
The Sony XD85 is clearly limited to enjoy the UHD Blu-ray, with a slab 8 bit HDR rendering flanged (bright peak at 425 cd / m², whatever the size of the target HDR), but again, the ACE saves the day and can offer an ultra dynamic image, very pleasant to look lit room. Nevertheless, the IPS puts his HDR limits with enough gray black, which can amount to more than 0.30 cd / m² at the brightest images, so again, you better watch Blu-ray UHD illuminated room .
Obviously we find the qualities to all Sony TVs with X1 processors and X-Reality Pro 4K, such as video processing and upscaling exceptional UHD, a beautiful picture with the Blu-ray UHD and a reference Motionflow for images a flawless fluidity with all types of content in 24, 50 and 60 im / s.
On the side of the interface, the same conclusion as the XD93, the Android OS TV has not changed one iota except that a lot of bugs have been fixed, the use is liked stable but I still encounter some bugs from time to time (the worst being the remote control no longer meets fairly regularly for a few seconds). We find the same version 5.1.1 and the same processors (GPU, CPU and Dual Core ARM), the same amount of memory, the same power. Still, I found the use of the pleasant interface and fun with enormous possibilities, applications mess, VOD services, music, games, utilities, etc. For cons, the multimedia part is much too unstable and unusable for my hand by the simple fact that the videos are stretched, distorted screen. In short, there's hope that the transition to Android 6.0 TV eventually stabilize everything, because there is a sacred potential!
The question is what grade to give to this television and there, it's not simple at all, it would take almost a note for dark room, and another room lit. As used in this TV lit room will delight its users, amply deserves a 4/5, but hard not to sanction a contrast as a weakling and HDR also bridled. Compared with the X85C last year, there has been no movement, it has the same characteristics with a contrast much lower and even loses the 3D compatibility when precisely this is one of the IPS panels qualities . Still, this TV seems to delight its users on the forum, offers a nice design, good quality / price ratio, a beautiful picture, beautiful colors, perfect fluidity, a report with the Blu-ray UHD pleasant, correct homogeneity .
So I decided to put her score of 3.5 / 5, but I honestly think it's the best TV IPS that I have seen so far and if you use your TV in an environment lit, TV pleases you immensely! Xavito καλημερα. Οπως επανειλημμένα εχω πει ενδιαφερομαι για αγορα sony 4κ αλλα κατω απο 50 ιντσες. Εχω δει σε ξενα forum να αναφερεται το μοντελο xd80 σε 43 ιντσες και με hdr. Αν βρεις περισσοτερες πληροφοριες καποια στιγμη αν μπορεις να τις επισημανεις. Ευχαριστω

Conclusion
A worthy successor to last year’s Bravia 75X94C, the Sony KD-75XD9405 seldom put a foot wrong in producing spellbindingly beautiful images in both SDR and HDR. While its dimming zone count and peak brightness didn’t go as high as other FALD (full-array local dimming) LED LCDs, in many ways we actually prefer its HDR presentation to most other transmissive Ultra HD Premium displays, thanks to Sony’s outstanding halo management, impressive colour accuracy and traditional strength of judder-free motion.
Scrutinise hard enough, and you can probably spot some minor evidence of cost cutting (LCD panel used, build quality, absence of powerful speakers, etc.), but at the end of the day, the Bravia XD94 does come in £2,500 or 33% cheaper than its X94C predecessor at list. Whichever way you look at it, a 75-inch TV that’s compatible with current 4K HDR standards (HDR10, HEVC, HDCP 2.2) and delivers some of the best picture quality around for only £5,000 is an extremely tempting proposition.

Sony officially unveils X80D, X75D and X70D 4K Android TVs

Just a few days after we reported on the new TVs, Sony has officially unveiled X70D, X75D and X80D for the US market. All three come with 4K resolution, HDR processing and Android TV.
Affordable 4K TVs
Sony has unveiled a total of five new TVs divided into three model ranges. Let us start from the bottom with X70D that will become Sony’s most affordable 2016 model with 4K resolution.

Sony X75D
X70D will be available in 49” and 55” sizes, both with 4K resolution. Sony will also make available X75D in 65”. The TVs come equipped with Google’s Android TV operating system. Sony says that X70D and X75D will be “upgradable to HDR compatibility via a firmware update later this year”.
Sony has also unveiled the X80D in 43” and 49” sizes. It offers 4K resolution and features HDR compatibility “to receive and process the new video standard”. No firmware update is required. However, seeing how HDR was implementing on the more expensive X85D, that we recently reviewed, we think that it is advisable to be a little skeptical of those claims of HDR. X80D will also come equipped with Android TV.
Sony did not confirm what type of LCD panel the new TVs employ.

From the Android TV app store you can download apps such as Google Play, Amazon Video, YouTube, Netflix, HBO Now, Hulu, and Sony’s new Ultra streaming service as well as games. Google Cast is part of Android TV, meaning that you can use the TVs like a Chromecast.
Sony is furthermore emphasizing a new app from Logitech that will allow you to set up home automation controls directly from the TV. If you want to know more about Logitech’s app see our report from CES 2016 that also includes a video demonstration.
