...Anyone expecting a direct successor to the ZD9 will probably be disappointed. Rather, the ZF9 should be considered as a stand-alone model and is probably after a look at the data sheet rather an improved XF90 . In the quasi predecessor ZD9 about 630 dimming zones were used, in the current model, there are only 104 dimming zones. Both devices are a direct LED backlight (FALD)...

We unbox the new Sony AF9 Master Series OLED TV, and go through the user menu to see if there's anything new in terms of picture settings. This OLED television is also marketed as the Bravia A9F in the USA.

Our review sample is the 65-inch KD-65AF9 which retails for £3999 in the UK at the time we filmed this video in September 2018.

We review the Sony AF9 Master Series OLED TV (also marketed as the Bravia A9F in the USA) which features the company's top-tier X1 Ultimate video processor, Pixel Contrast Booster technology, HDR support for HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision, Acoustic Surface Audio+, as well as faster Android TV platform (Oreo 8.0).

Two screen sizes are available, namely the 55-inch Sony KD-55AF9 and the 65-inch KD-65AF9.

Hands-on review of the Sony A9F 2018 OLED TV

The A9F is a 2018 model in Sony’s highest end ‛MASTER’ series. In this review, we compare it to 4 other popular models.

Like all OLEDs, it delivers perfectly deep blacks, and has wide viewing angles. HDR looks great thanks to the excellent wide color gamut, and the best color volume that we've measured so far on an OLED. It has excellent motion handling, low input lag, and all four HDMI ports support HDMI 2.0 full bandwidth. Unfortunately, it isn't very bright with bright white scenes. The Android 8.0 smart platform is much faster than previous Sony TVs

The Z9F is the successor to the Z9D. The performance is somewhere in between VA-type TVs and IPS-type TVs. The contrast ratio is fairly low, so blacks do appear gray when viewed in a completely dark room.

The TV has local dimming to mitigate this dark scene performance though, and it works well. When viewed in a bright room the TV can get exceptionally bright to overcome glare or produce bright highlights in HDR. The Z9F has low input lag and an excellent fast response time which is great for gamers.

Should also be valid for the 75" (XBR75Z9F)

We compare the picture quality of the Panasonic FZ952 vs the Sony AF9 (also marketed as the Bravia A9F in the USA), two of the best OLED TVs available to buy in 2018.

Topics compared include near-black handling, colour accuracy, motion, upscaling, gradation, HDR (Dolby Vision & HDR10+), as well as input lag for gaming.
