Lighter, faster… a real iPad Air 2 rival

Our Early Verdict

As a laptop, the Xperia Z4 Tablet excels - it's just not quite good enough to be a laptop replacement.
For

Lightweight
Clear and bright screen

Against

Laptop dock badly weighted
Keyboard likely to be expensive

Early verdict

The Sony Xperia Z4 tablet is a really great swcixw. It's easily going to scream into second place in the race for best tablet, and will be streets ahead in the league table of best Android tablets.

It's got a lovely screen, lightweight design, all the Sony elements you'd look for and the right power combination to keep it at the forefront of slate technology for a few years, which is how long users will have it for.

The issue that it has to overcome - and there's not a lot Sony can do about this - is that Android still trails iOS for dedicated tablet apps. The ecosystem for the iPad is such that no matter how much stuff you can do with the Android version, unless there's something very specific you're looking for the Apple tablet is generally the better choice.

I like what Sony's doing with the 'business' interface with the keyboard - we need more things that help a slate be a real rival to the laptop. You'll have to download the Google suite of word processing / spreadsheets apps (Apple's office apps are superior and free too though) but that's all you'll need to get working on the go.

Lighter, faster a real iPad Air 2 rival

Our Verdict

Sony's Xperia Z4 Tablet is the best Android tablet available on the market right now and is the only one capable of putting up a fight against the iPad Air 2.

If Android tablets are to have a shot at taking on the iPad, Sony's new challenger is exactly what they need.

The tablet market is a very different place since Sony last launched a 10-inch tablet. Where then the Xperia Z2 Tablet was a credible threat to the iPad in a new and exciting arena, the Xperia Z4 Tablet has landed in a very different place.

Right now there isn't really any Android device standing up against the almighty iPad Air 2 with the Nexus 9 not proving all that popular and Samsung stopping its flood of the market with a huge range of slates.

Sony now has a chance to smash and grab with a fantastic Android tablet and it comes at a good point in its cycle as well, as due to the Sony Xperia Tablet Z3 Compact coming through in the latter half of last year we've not had a full blown 10-inch slate from the company for over a year either

For

Gorgeous display
New improved design
Strong battery life

Against

Problematic UI
Only 32GB option
Expensive price tag

The Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet is a great alternative to the iPad. It's easily going to scream into second place in the race for best tablet, and will be streets ahead in the league table of best Android tablets.

If you want to avoid Apple's slate or want something just a little bit different to the iPad then give the Xperia Z4 Tablet a go. It's the best slate from the company yet and in my opinion it's the best Android option out there, but you're going to have to part with a bit of cash to experience it.

Re: [Επίσημο] Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet

Although the feature does arguably make it one of the most robust tablets on the market the rest of the design does make it feel like it'd snap on the slightest drop.

Like in the past Sony has chucked some pretty hefty bezels surrounding the tablet. Those have been whittled down a little further than on the Xperia Z2 Tablet but they're still quite cumbersome.

It doesn't really add much to the Android experience and I can see how it may confuse new users. Sony won't ever want to drop it though so it seems we're stuck with it.

Re: [Επίσημο] Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet

Re: [Επίσημο] Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet

Update 29 June 2015: We obtained a retail version of the tablet and updated the review so it reflects the performance of the finalized product.

Final words

While Sony is busy figuring out what to do with its flagship phone line, the Xperia Z4 Tablet manages to make a compelling case for the entire Z-series. It obviously won't get as much exposure, or generate the same sales numbers as a top-end smartphone, but shows that Sony is still capable of putting together a proficient smart device.

For starters, the tablet impresses with its slim profile. At 6.1mm it's currently tied at the top of the thinness chart, together with the iPad Air 2. More impressively though, the Sony tablet easily wins the weight competition, which is arguably what matters more in daily use.

Bezels are just the right size for a comfortable grip, without being excessively large. That, combined with the materials used, adds up to a successful design that looks stylish and handles well. And let's not forget the IP68 rating for peace of mind in less than ideal weather conditions

The 10.1-inch display is plenty bright and has good viewing angles, though contrast does suffer when viewed from the side. Resolution is much better than the predecessor and everything is perfectly sharp. The screen is a fingerprint nightmare though, but keeping a 10-inch slate clean was never going to be easy.

Battery life is excellent too even on our yet-to-be-finalized unit. Video playback may not reach the advertised 17 hours in our standardized test, but 14 and half hours is still a number worthy of admiration. When browsing the web, the Xperia Z4 Tablet will last you a full 12 hours, also a great result.

Android purists will find a lot to like in the Xperia UI, as Sony has, in typical company fashion, stayed close to stock Android Lollipop, with a few proprietary apps on top. There are however some questionable decisions in terms of screen area utilization, with some apps wasting the 10.1-inch diagonal.

Perhaps a little work needs to be done for better multi-window implementation, too. The small apps are a good compromise on a smaller smartphone screen, but on a large tablet with aspirations for serious work use, they just fall short.

The Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet doesn't disappoint in raw performance either, at least what we could measure from it. The prototype unit we had for testing only ran a few of our benchmarks, but posted solid scores in the ones it did. We'll wait to receive a working unit to run the full set of tests, but the numbers look promising at this point.

The tablet comes with an attractive multimedia package. The gallery is rich in features, the Music app has carried the abundant Walkman functionality, if not the badge, and the Movies video player has extensive codec and subtitle support. There's a capable document editor on board too, as there should be, given the tablet's business orientation.

Speaking of work, the optional BKB50 Bluetooth keyboard dock does wonders in boosting productivity while maintaining a slim profile. You get to have a tablet for fun and an ultrabook for work, all in the same device.

Then there's the matter of price. The Xperia Z4 Tablet is certainly not for those on a tight budget, currently listed for pre-order at £499 in the United Kingdom or 579 elsewhere, which is not exactly affordable. The keyboard dock comes extra, but it's yet unclear just how much.

Flagships were never meant to offer the best value for money though and the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet put up a convincing performance in its attempt to be the most capable slate in the market. We'll need to get our hands on a retail unit to do some more testing, but even at this early stage it's clearly a comprehensive offering, if you're on the lookout for a 10-inch slate

Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet Review
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Sony-Xperia-Z4-Tablet-Review.146228.0.html

Pro

+ Very light and very thin
+ Rubberized back
+ Waterproof and dust-resistant
+ Very fast components
+ Bright and high-contrast display
+ High resolution
+ Usable cameras
+ Decent speakers
+ Fast Wi-Fi and LTE
+ Telephone function

Cons

- Insufficient stability
- Thermal issues with throttling
- Power adaptor insufficient
- Extremely long charging time
- Mediocre GPS performance

Verdict

Thin, light, waterproof, powerful and top features – this is familiar for Sony tablets nowadays. All these characteristics also apply for the Xperia Z4 Tablet. This could already be the end of the verdict, if there weren’t some issues. But let’s start with the good things about the flagship device from Sony: The Japanese managed to make the Z4 even thinner and lighter compared to its predecessor, and the top model from Sony actually feels like a featherweight for a 10-inch tablet. The build quality is at least visually flawless. Sony does not use any metal, but the plastic chassis still feels sophisticated in the hands and does not slip easily, either.

The Japanese use everything you can currently get for the connectivity: Very fast SoC, a lot of RAM, expandable internal storage and very fast communication modules. This is accompanied by a bright, high-contrast and high-resolution display, usable cameras and two decent speakers. The performance of the Xperia Z4 Tablet is mainly convincing, and it is almost too powerful in practice…

…but the tablet cannot always utilize this performance. Similar to its smartphone sibling Xperia Z3 Plus, the Z4 Tablet suffers from thermal issues. The resulting heat does not only result in a very warm chassis. The performance is also affected after a while. It seems that Sony is not able to handle the heat, which is pretty much the only explanation when two high-end devices suffer from the same phenomenon. The weak power adaptor should not get by a working quality control, either. The results are annoyingly long charging times and it is not even powerful enough to charge the battery when you use the tablet. It is even worse: The battery capacity decreases. It is also unfortunate that the stability of the chassis suffers from the dimensions. We would have expected more. The battery runtimes are only average, at least under practical conditions. These flaws are also the reason that the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet cannot secure a spot in our Top 10 ranking.

This means our verdict must be: The Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet is a tablet with great features and a very low weight. The lacking stability and the thermal issues, however, have to be considered before you buy the device. Those flaws should not be a problem for a device that retails for 700 Euros (~$770).

SONY XPERIA Z4 TABLET REVIEW

PROS
-large, bright, high resolution display
-front facing speakers
-Hi-Res audio
-great build quality
-microSD expansion
-excellent performance
-easy to use software
-PlayStation integration
-IP65/68 certified against water and dust
-thin and lightweight

It looks like Xperia Z3 Plus, Z4 Tablet and 2015 mid-rangers will bypass Android 5.1.1
