Multi-core iPhones in 2009? No
Published 7 days ago by Seth Weintraub at 9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence
There are some rumors around the net that started by the Apple Core. The idea is that a quad core processor would grace the next revision of the iPhone. It won't. Let's just stop those rumors right here. The ARM architecture for multicore chips doesn't even start picking up steam until 2010. In 2009, the Cortex A8 will continue to gain momentum. Toward the end of the year, devices based on the A9 single core architecture could start appearing. To be fair to the ...

It seems as if the internet is sending a little rumble out about this new hardware update for the iPhone. Apparently, and it has been true so far, the iPhone is on a product cycle “march” as Phil Schiller says. Every June, which has only been once a new iPhone been introduced. So in an unofficial way Phil Schiller has come out and said that there is a new hardware update for the iPhone in June. It really seems that way doesn’t it. I know that takes all speculation out of guessing when updates are coming to the iPhone, but Phil said it not me.
Now that we’ve discovered when the next iPhone announcement is what should we expect? Will we get push service, what about video conferencing that was SOO wanted when 2.0 came with the iPhone 3G? How about they give us Wifi syncing, or even induction charging so we don’t have to plug it in each night. What about the hardware, will there be a front facing video camera for the video conferencing? Apple did apply for a patent that put the camera behind the screen. That keeps Apple moving at a blistering pace to be putting out a new iPhone and completely new version of the firmware each year.
Well there hasn’t been much rumble through the tubes about the 3.0 firmware and what that will bring but there is speculation about the hardware update that Apple will do. According to reports by both ZDNet and Macrumors, the firmware version 3.0 will support quad core processing. Will our iPhone really go to that extreme and have FOUR little ARM processors in there? What about my battery life? Those are my first thoughts to this news. Right now everyone is pointing this to an iPhone hardware update, but what about other full touch-screen devices? There has been the always rumored tablet Mac, that gets discussed every year but never shows up.
Needless to say a multi-core iPhone does promise many great things. The speed and “snappiness,” as is said, would be incredible. The iPhone right now is the fastest phone out there. The interface is smooth and quick, and apps don’t take to terribly long to load anyway. It would be great to have the extra power, ESPECIALLY if apps are allowed then to run simultaneously. Perhaps they would limit the number of apps to say 5, but with a multi-core processor the iPhone wouldn’t have any problem doing it. The only issue is battery life. Apple does have some new fancy battery technology that I’m sure we will see pop up not only in all of their notebook computers, but in ALL of their mobile devices. It just simply has to. Another side effect of this hardware update is supposedly a new video chip that would finally bring the iPhone to the HD world. Video playback and the rest. It would probably change up the graphics in games, making them clearer and the developers could create some pretty intense games. Also new animations might be able to be done.
Of course we can’t forget that Apple does own it’s own chip making company. We can’t rule out that Apple isn’t using it’s acquisition of PA Semi for the new iPhone chips. Apple has a license for ARM chips and can now create their own versions of them, but if they make their own chips will it be quad-core?
Only time will tell what our beloved, and ever so sneaky company, Apple will do. What are your predictions for June? Perhaps Phil is throwing us off and an iPhone update will come sooner. I think June is a good time for this update to come out, and I don’t want quad-core out of fear for battery life. I’ll take a dual-core iPhone first. But Apple can surprise with their new battery technology. Let’s wait and see what happens, we have no other choice really. Thoughts?
