Surface Book 2 review: Microsoft gets closer to the 'ultimate laptop

Pros

Hinge is stronger than before
Better CPU and graphics
15-inch screen can fully compete with the MacBook Pro
Works well as a tablet

Cons

Expensive if you need more storage
Doesn’t come with Surface Pen

Summary

The Surface Book 2 is one of the most powerful and well-designed Windows laptops on the market. And thanks to its improved hinge, it doesn’t feel any different than a traditional notebook. It’s the best MacBook Pro competitor we’ve seen yet.

POWERFUL, STYLISH, AND PRODUCTIVE AF
Surface Book 2 15-inch review: The ultimate Windows laptop gets bigger and better

I have a lot of laptops at my disposal, but it is the Surface Book 2 15 that does everything. Gaming, inking, tablet, productivity, all the ports I need, excellent typing and that outstanding battery life. There is no other device on the planet right now that is as capable as the Surface Book 2 15 and that says a lot seeing all the great hardware HP, Dell, Lenovo and the rest are bringing to market.

The Surface Book 2 15 is not just the ultimate laptop it may very well be the ultimate PC.

See at Microsoft

PROS:

Excellent build quality and features.
A true gaming PC with outstanding performance.
All-day battery life.
It does everything a PC an do in 2017.

CONS:

Very expensive.
No Thunderbolt 3 or eGPU support.
Windows Mixed Reality seems like an afterthought.

Verdict

In review: Microsoft Surface Book 2. Test model courtesy of Notebooksbilliger.

Microsoft promises a lot for the new Surface Book 2. The 13.5-inch convertible is a really good device in some respects, but we are sometimes wondering why the manufacturer ignores known issues or waives modern standards, respectively.

Let's begin with the good things. Microsoft says the new device is twice as powerful as before. This is true as long as you focus on the CPU performance. The new ULV quad-core from Intel is much faster compared to the previous dual-core models. We can only praise Microsoft for the performance utilization, which is very decent, despite the passive cooling. Some laptops with actively cooled CPUs perform worse. However, not much changed for the graphics card. Yes, the GTX 1050 performs well, but it is not much faster than the previous GTX 965M. The new Surface Book 2 also lasts longer on battery, still uses an excellent display, and has a nice chassis with comfortable input devices.

The Surface Book 2 13.5" is once again almost unrivaled thanks to the good performance. However, there are some compromises (no Thunderbolt 3!), which are hard to swallow for the high price.

The biggest problem is revealed when you stress the dedicated GeForce GPU, because the fan is really loud. We showed how you can easily bypass this issue with the new performance settings of Windows without sacrificing much performance.

A bigger issue, which seems to be acceptable for Microsoft, is the power delivery. The power adapter is not always sufficient during gaming, so the batteries are slightly discharged and charged again. This cannot be good for the battery health. It might be related to a limitation of the Surface Connector since the power adapter of our test model should be sufficient. This brings us to the next problem, the ports. Microsoft probably sticks to the Surface Connector to ensure compatibility with the old Surface Dock. This is unfortunately a big limitation. A modern Thunderbolt 3 port would be more practical and future-proof. An additional USB Type-C port at the tablet would have been nice as well.

The battery situation is not perfect, either. There is a connector for the power adapter at the tablet, but it still takes almost 2.5 hours to charge the small battery. This can probably be fixed via software update. An "empty" tablet can unfortunately not be charged by the battery in the keyboard unit, either.

You can easily avoid the loud fan in this case and the power delivery should not be a big deal in practice as long as you avoid the Best Performance setting. The missing Thunderbolt 3 support is a bigger issue for more than 2200 Euros ($1999) though. The Surface Pen is not included anymore, either, and has to be purchased separately. The 13.5-inch convertible is still almost unrivaled on the market thanks to the high performance and leaves a positive overall impression.

Full αναλυτικό review για το 15αρι από AnandTech.
The Microsoft Surface Book 2 (15-Inch) Review: Second Time's The Charm
https://www.anandtech.com/show/12167/the-microsoft-surface-book-2-15-inch-review

1.CPU Conclusion

As we saw with the ASUS ZenBook 3, the move to quad-core in the U series of Core chips has been very welcome. The performance increase is impressive over the older dual-core models, and although the eight threads run into the thermal limit quicker than the do on the higher-wattage HQ series chips, such as seen in the Dell XPS 15, the Core i7-8650U is still a very strong performer.

2.The GTX 1060 is a massive improvement over the original GT 940MX based Surface Book, and moves it out of being somewhat better than integrated, into a laptop with some serious gaming potential. The performance difference on the most GPU demanding test, Fire Strike, over the GTX 1050 is also a huge leap

GPU Conclusion

The jump from the original GT 940MX found in the Surface Book, to the GTX 1060 in the Surface Book 2, is a massive increase in performance. The Surface Book 2 isn’t what most people would consider a gaming laptop, but the 15-inch model offers plenty of compute if you ever do want to game. For office productivity, apps that take advantage of CUDA, such as Adobe’s suite, should see some much-improved performance over almost any other productivity laptop. Really, to match the GPU performance in this laptop, you’d have to jump into the gaming notebook arena with something like a Razer Blade 14.

3.Display Conclusion

Microsoft continues to be the only major PC maker to color calibrate all of their devices, and the Surface Book 2 sets new levels for accuracy in a notebook. The display also has amazing contrast. It’s not difficult to add these together and say that the Surface Book 2 has the best display on any laptop

4.Speakers

Much like the new Surface Pro, the speakers on the new Surface Book 2 have improved in sound quality, offering stronger mid-range and bass levels than before. They sound remarkably good, for a notebook. The speakers are located in the display and are front firing, which likely helps with the sound as well. They don’t get overly loud, at around 74-75 dB(A) on our test track, but with the better sound quality that’s a good trade-off.

:drool1:
