Samsung QN65Q9FN Review: QLED Strikes Back - With A Vengeance
Verdict
Samsung has responded to the criticisms leveled at it in 2017 in emphatic fashion. The QN65Q9FN delivers not just the best picture quality I’ve ever seen from an LCD TV, but the best HDR picture I’ve seen from any TV period.
Being able to combine its now brilliantly inky black levels with its class-leading brightness and color volumes unlocks more of HDR’s potential than any TV before. And it’s a glorious sight.
The TV isn’t quite perfect. Care has to be taken with the TV’s gamma/brightness settings to avoid black crushing, and sharpness preset values can cause a little noise.
Also, of course, the set doesn’t support Dolby Vision. However, there is now growing support for Samsung’s HDR10+ alternative dynamic HDR format. And even as a Dolby Vision ‛fan’, HDR10 looks so good on the QN65Q9FN that refusing to even consider the set just because it doesn’t support Dolby Vision could turn out to be a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face.
It remains to be seen how the rest of Samsung’s 2018 TV range will pan out given that most of its other sets will use edge rather than direct LED lighting. In the US, only the Q8FN will also use direct lighting with local dimming, while at the time of writing the Q9FN series will be the only sets in Europe to take the direct lighting approach.
For now, though, the QN65Q9FN does a spectacular job of crushing any idea that might have started to gain currency in 2017 that OLED technology is now the only TV technology that matters.
