According to reports from Korea, Samsung Electronics will not show any OLED TVs at CES 2022. We hoped that the company will unveil the first QD-OLED TVs during the show, and also perhaps WOLED TVs that use panels produced by LGD.

According to reports from Korea, LG and Samsung did not reach an agreement on WOLED panel prices, even though LGD agreed to offer its WOLED panels to Samsung at a lower cost than it sells these to LG Electronics.

The Elec says that LG Display is willing to offer around $650 for a 65-inch WOLED panel, or a discount of over 10% compared to the price LG Electronics pays ($750). But Samsung demands an even further discount to <$600.

We do not know why Samsung will not show a QD-OLED TV later this week at CES, but the reports from Korea suggest that Samsung Display is still struggling with QD-OLED production and could not produce enough panels for Samsung Electronics to start selling the TVs.

Samsung will launch two new microLED TVs, sized 89-inch and 101-inch at CES. These TVs are likely to be highly expensive though, and will not compete with OLED TVs and high-end QLED TVs.

Samsung Electronics and LG Display’s negotiations over the price of TV OLED panels that the latter will supply are hitting a snag due to the parties failing to agree on an appropriate unit price, TheElec has learned.

According to sources, LG Display has offered to supply the panels at a price lower than the one it gives to affiliate LG Electronics. But Samsung Electronics is requesting further price cuts.
The pair has so far failed to reach a final agreement, the sources said.

LG Display is offering OLED panels for a 65-inch TV at mid-US$600. This is around 10% cheaper than US$750 LG Display sells the same panel to LG Electronics.

But Samsung is demanding a price between late-US$500 to early-US$600, or around a hundred dollars lower than that offered by LG Display.

Sources said LG Display is finding Samsung’s request hard to accept.

For Samsung, buying the panels cheaper by US$150 will allow it to reduce the sales price of its 65-inch OLED TV by US$450.
Currently, LG Electronics sells its 65-inch OLED TV for around US$1,800 to US$2,800 at Bestbuy in the US.

Meanwhile, during the negotiations, Samsung also told LG Display that it wants to procure their entry-level TV OLED panels, which they already supply to LG Electronics, as well.

LG Display grades its TV OLED panels by three levels: R, P and M.
LG Electronics procures all three tiers and has a wide range of OLED TVs.
Sony, which also buys OLED panels from LG Display, usually only buys the highest tier ones, and offers OLED TVs as a premium product.

Sources said Samsung wants the entry-level OLED panels as well to lower the sales prices of its TVs.

It is already planning to offer its Neo QLED TV as its highest consumer premium TV in 2022. Neo QLED TV is a liquid crystal display (LCD) TV with MiniLED backlighting.

Therefore, it wants OLED TVs, which will be positioned below Neo QLED TV, to be offered at a cheaper price range than Neo QLED TV, while at the same time making sure they are still profitable.

As Samsung is expected to buy in bulk of up to around 2 million units of OLED panels, it is using this buying power to pressure LG Display to cut unit prices.

Additionally, Samsung is the world’s largest TV vendor, which makes them an alluring customer for panel makers like LG Display.

However, LG Display is yet to mark an annual profit from its TV OLED panel business.

Its performance this year, which showed growth compared to 2020, was mostly down the LCD sales.

However, LCD prices have been going down again during the second half of 2021 after they spiked during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

LG Display needs new profits to offset this decline, making Samsung an attractive customer.

Also, having Samsung push OLED TV will be beneficial for LG Display as it may cause the TV market to shift towards OLED TV from LCD TV at a faster pace.

Meanwhile, the pair’s negotiations will also impact the price of Samsung Display’s Quantum Dot (QD)-OLED panels.

If Samsung succeeds in procuring OLED panels from LG Display, which uses White OLED technology, at the price it wants, it can pressure Samsung Display to offer its QD-OLED panels at a similar price or at least demand discounts.

Samsung put its new 89-inch MicroLED TV vs the company's 85-inch flagship 4K Neo QLED TV in a side-by-side comparison at CES 2022.
There have also been improvements to the manufacturing process and LED chip size, which will hopefully bring the sky-high price down... eventually.

But here's the thing: Samsung isn't marketing the S95B as a 'QD-OLED'. It's referring to it simply as an 'OLED'.

Well, consider my flabber well and truly gasted. Why would a company come up with a TV featuring brand new panel technology and then go out of its way to make it look as if it's nothing new at all?
OLED has been around for ages now and every TV brand worth its salt already has OLED models in its range. Samsung has added something genuinely new and innovative to the OLED formula in the form of Quantum Dots, which should improve colour reproduction and brightness, but now appears to have gone out of its way to hide that fact.
It's an especially peculiar decision when you consider that reports last year suggested that Samsung was actually planning to omit the 'OLED' portion of the 'QD-OLED' monicker in order to distance its new panel technology from standard OLED, which it's been campaigning against for years. That would have been very petty but at least it would have made a weird sort of sense. To omit the 'QD' bit? The differentiating bit? The exciting bit? That's just odd.
So what's going on here? There's no way to be sure, but it rather seems as if Samsung simply doesn't know what to do with its new QD-OLED TV. 2021 was packed with rumours of protracted negotiations between Samsung Display (which manufactures the panels) and Samsung Electronics (which builds and sells the actual TV sets), and so far this year we've seen the S95B being given a CES Innovation Award and being leaked by an authorised retailer but left off all of Samsung's own press releases. Meanwhile, reports of production issues and disagreements between Samsung Display and Samsung Electronics have persisted.
To top it all off, today's press release from Samsung, which finally officially announces the S95B, gives it third and final billing below not only the company's new 8K QLEDs, but also the new versions of its Frame and Serif 'Lifestyle' models. What's more, said press release barely alludes to the ground-breaking nature of the TV. That's no way to treat what should be one of the most exciting television launches of the year. It's almost as if Samsung is embarrassed of the S95B.
The long, potholed road to the S95B's launch makes you wonder whether it's actually going to be any good. We certainly think it could and should be, as Sony's A95K, which also features a QD-OLED panel manufactured by none other than Samsung Display, looked excellent when we recently saw it in action. So far, though, Samsung is making all the wrong noises.
