In this video I'm showing how Ambient light sensor active greatly affects HDR performance - especially in dark room with default minimum brightness level. This is just to highlight that if you want impactful HDR performance make sure to check how is ambient light sensor adjusted on your TV - in this case Samsung QE50QN90B NeoQLED was used.

In this video I'll show you the interface and the actual performance (menus and performance overview) of the Tizen OS 6.5 that is available on Samsung QE50QN90B.

HDR​

In HDR mode on the 10% board, the luminance after three minutes of measurement was only 226 cd / m ^ 2 (nits), which is 32 cd / m ^ 2 (nits) less than in the 55-inch model of the same series.
This is a very low result – practically the same as on the content... SDR, which can only mean one thing: Samsung 50BU8002 is not suitable for HDR content.

Spectral Power Distribution (filmmaker mode)

The shape and width of the emission in the green range confirms the use of quantum dots to convert light from blue backlight LEDs.
However, the rather large width of the red spectral line is surprising. There is no doubt that Samsung engineers used a different solution to convert blue to red than in the Q80A from 2022 – a solution, unfortunately, not as effective (not to say worse).
I suspect that in this case the conversion is not carried out by quantum dots, but it is either emission from red LEDs or another solution unknown to me.
If we accept my hypothesis, the question arises, why the backlight uses inferior components and withdraws from the proven solution known from last year's Q80A series?
Answer: we are probably dealing here with a desire to reduce costs.
Contrary to the prevailing opinion among laymen, quantum dots are not the same (so there is no such thing as "QLED" or its model or typical representative), and those that have a narrower spectral line are just... Expensive.
Unfortunately, the almost obsessive constant pursuit by the Korean manufacturer to reduce costs (also visible in its other models) did not remain without impact on the image parameters, which will be discussed in more detail later in the review.

Unfortunately, replacing the existing red quantum dots with others or getting rid of them completely had a negative impact on color reproduction.
Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, the new QE Q80B has most likely been dotted with red quantum dots.

HDR​

In HDR mode on the board 10% luminance after three minutes of measurement was 835 cd/m²(nits).
Interestingly, on the full-screen board the brightness was as high as 525 cd/m²(nits).

As you know, I rarely do it, i.e. openly and bluntly advise against buying a given TV, but this time the proverbial scoop has changed.

Black and contrast​

In filmmaker mode, the ANSI contrast ratio was 4237:1. This is a good, although not outstanding result for this type of panels. Unfortunately, in the factory settings of this mode, the TV has very incorrect brightness characteristics, which makes the grays in the 5-65% range darker than they should be. The apogee of darkening is in the 30-40% range, which makes colors in darker scenes muffled and not as vivid as they should be.

1. change the color temperature from factory "warm2" to "warm 1";
2. change the gamma option "BT1886" from factory "0" to "+2".

The best effect will be achieved by professional calibration of the gray palette, gamma and individual colors (the TV has the appropriate options for this).

It is worth noting that vertically the phenomenon of degradation is more annoying than horizontally.

As you can see, zonal dimming has its price, although in my opinion there is no tragedy.
Algorithms controlling multi-zone backlighting will always have to make some compromise between the depth of black and maintaining the original brightness.
Each manufacturer has its own priorities here, and Samsung prioritizes black and tries at all costs to make the halos as invisible as possible. In my opinion, this is quite a reasonable approach, which may not convince uncompromising videophiles or moviegoers, but it should appeal to most typical users who put the depth of black and the lack of annoying halos in the first place.

Let's check one more thing: whether the halos are really not visible. In most cases, you can't see them, but on demanding materials or in very specific situations, the TV is not able to hide them.
