Hi everyone, I'm Spyros from Greece,
Being a traditional audiophile for many years, I'm up to challenge my luck in the computer audio field. As a start I would like to use my 4 years old laptop, with the 0404. Furthermore I intend to buy a external hard disk (Lacie 1 terra with usb interface) to store my HD 24/96 music. My laptop has 3 USB 2.0 ports . However, I wonder if I could simultaneously connect the Lacie and the 0404, and make the whole thing work smoothly. And that's because I 've read somewhere that all the USB's use a common bandwidth (or something like that), so I don't know if I 'll have all the 'capacity' needed to finally have a 24/96 output (either from digital or analog outputs of the 0404) to my amp.
Any comments ? Should I buy a firewire audio interface instead, (eg. M-Audio firewire solo) and hook it up the firewire port of my Compaq?
Thank you for your attention .

Hi Spyros
You're almost there with the USB thing. Each USB root hub is separate and has its own bandwidth. The confusion generally arises because people assume that each socket on their machine is a separate hub. This is generally not true. In order to save money, most manufacturers will 'piggy back' 2 sockets on the same hub - these 'piggy backed' sockets will share bandwidth.
The trick is to treat pairs of sockets very close together as one hub. So, on my laptop, there are four sockets - 1 pair are arranged one above the other (1 discrete hub) - and 1 pair are arranged side-by-side (1 discrete hub). So I have 2 root hubs and this is confirmed in Device Manager.
On your laptop, if you connect the dac to the usb socket that is on its own and connect all other usb devices through the paired sockets, then you should be fine.
