I was very excited when I purchased this machine since I had a Krups espresso machine before that lasted for 3.5 years. This machine started out great however the top of the frothing wand is made very poorly. When cleaning the machine you need to remove the frothing wand..the problem is that there are 3 plastic prawns on the top that are very, very delicate. The first time I removed it (twist then pull gently) one of the three prawns broke off. Krups was very good about replacing it without cost. Unfortunately, the second time it broke off again. When I called Krups they refuse to replace the item unless I paid for it and then went on to say they would not cover any other parts. I only had the machine for approximately 7 weeks. I have since returned it and because of the bad customer service from Krups I will no longer buy their products...I just don't trust them anymore.

The steam wand on this machine has a tendency to come off at high velocity. Into your milk. Which may be between 120 and 160 degrees. The carnage from this event usually means a wall has to be wiped down and clothes have to be changed.

We have followed the cleaning regimen to the letter. We follow the assembly directions exactly.

The collar which compresses the hooks over the frothing wand rim is just not sturdy enough to secure it. When it heats up, it becomes pliable and transforms into a rocket. I jest, but hot milk and unexpected steam jets are no joke.

It does make great espresso though. Easy to clean and works quickly.

If you are going to use this primarily for lattes and cappuccinos, find another model or brand.

****Update****

3 Weeks have lapsed.

The threaded portion of the wand has cracked. The steamer is now useless. Krups refuses to issue me a new assembly until I get them their reference number. The problem is obvious and rampant and I would advise anyone looking to purchase this type of device to steer clear of Krups until they get this problem addressed.

If I could return the device I would gladly do so.

First of all, I did not buy this machine from Amazon. However, I've had some real problems and wanted to share. The XP5240 espresso machines I have owned have made good espresso, but the steam function has caused me problems.

My previous espresso machine was also by Krups and lasted over 7 years. I opted for the XP5240 because of the positive experience I've had with my previous machine and the updated features on this model. The first XP5240 I got had to go back to the retailer because it never worked correctly. I would steam milk for 2-5 MINUTES to heat it with no froth at all.

My second machine had great steam until the rubber o-ring (which fell off almost everytime I removed the frothing nozzle) dissappeared from the steaming wand. I've called Krups to have a replacement sent and they were very helpful. I originally looked for the part to buy but they are not available for purchase. I'm surprised about two things. First of all this 0-ring comes off the steaming want so easily. Second, you can't buy replacement parts. I would think others have had similar problems.

So far, the longest period of uninterrupted time any of my XP5240 machines have worked is 3 weeks. Sadly, my next purchase will not be a Krups.
