How can I connect an external equalizer to my Denon receiver?
Being that most AV receivers designed today no longer provide a Pre-Out and Main Amp In that work in conjunction, there's really no easy way to loop an external EQ through the receiver for playback with all sources. Also, given the fact that most receivers designed today either include some type of room correction software (Audyssey) or a Manual EQ for internal equalization, there really is less of a need to integrate an external EQ with your receiver.
That being said, if you wish to use an external EQ with your receiver you can make it work. However, it will limit the use of your unit where you will only be able to output the equalized signal in stereo. The points for hook up are:
-Main Pre-out L&R from the Denon AVR into the EQ's input.
-EQ's output to an analog (red and white) audio input on the Denon AVR. (ie: CD)
-Hook up the stereo speakers (Front L&R) to the Surround Back / Amp Assign speaker terminals on your Denon AVR.
-Set the AVR's Amp Assign to Zone 2.
-Power on the AVR's Zone 2 and leave it set to the source you have plugged into. (ie: CD)
What this hookup allows for is the equalized signal to be passed through as a Zone 2 signal. Meaning, Zone 2 will always be powered on and set to the designated source where the input connection is made (ie: CD) and the equalized signal will only output in stereo. The Center, Surround, and SW channels will not be able to process through the external EQ.
