We compare the picture quality of the LG GX vs the Sony A8 (also marketed as the Bravia A8H in the USA), both 2020 OLED TVs. Our findings can also be applied to the LG CX which has the same panel and video processing as the GX.

Topics covered include near-black handling, colour accuracy, motion performance including 120Hz BFI, video processing including upscaling, screen uniformity, HDR including Dolby Vision, as well as gaming including input lag.

Our review samples are the 65-inch LG OLED65GX and Sony KD-65A8.

We compare the picture quality of OLED vs QLED TV in a side-by-side comparison, using two 2020 4K models, namely the LG CX OLED vs the Samsung QE Q95T/ Q90T QLED television.

Aspects compared include contrast performance, colour accuracy, motion handling, video processing, screen uniformity, HDR, input lag for gaming, HDMI 2.1 support, viewing angles, as well as bright-room usage.

Our review samples are the 55-inch LG OLED55CX and Samsung QE55Q95T.

We review the LG 65GX (pronounced as G10) OLED TV which has been designed to be wall-mounted flush against the wall. Topics covered include near-black handling, colour accuracy, motion performance including [OLED Motion Pro] 120Hz black frame insertion, video processing, screen uniformity, HDR including Dolby Vision, as well as input lag + AMD Freesync Premium support (added by firmware 3.10.xx) for gaming. We also demonstrate the ThinQ AI hands-free voice assistant.

Our LG GX review sample is the 65-inch LG OLED65GX, but it also comes in 55-inch (OLED55GX) and 77-inch (OLED77GX) screen sizes.

This video was graded and uploaded in HDR10, and so is best viewed on an HDR display. Please let us know how it looks to you in the Youtube comment section below.

Conclusion

We are very pleased with the CX because this TV scores well on almost all points. We were last year with the C9, but we found the awkwardly short power cord a downside. Unfortunately, the CX is also equipped with such a stingy short and detachable cable of which you only have a meter left when you use the cable guide in the base. We do not understand that with such an expensive TV you have to save on the power cord.

The image quality is simply great: the contrast is enormous, the viewing angles are very wide and the display is very accurate. The large contrast makes viewing HDR images an experience, but the maximum brightness is clearly less in a lot of ambient light, especially compared to expensive LCDs. Still, these days it is possible to see well with a little more light in the viewing area, because the average brightness can be increased at the expense of some accuracy.

The CX is an excellent choice for gamers. The input lag is low, there is support for variable frame rates in the form of freesync and G-Sync and, moreover, 4k images with 120fps can be displayed thanks to HDMI 2.1. Thanks to webOS and the Magic Remote, the operation is also pleasant and the sound is also excellent. It is a pity that the support for dts sound has been discontinued this year.

Due to scarcity, the 48" model we tested is still very expensive for the time being. More expensive even than the 55" version. It is nice that there is now a smaller size, but at the moment the price is really too high. In addition, the differences with last year's C9 are very small and it still supports dts sound. As long as the C9 is still available, that is in our eyes the better choice.

Where the Nano90 really performs well is in a typical living room with ambient lighting present

Verdict:

Overall, the LG Nano90 is a competent LED LCD TV that has the usual issues associated with the technology and performs adequately with all the various content thrown at it. It performs well in a normal living room with an accurate image quality that displays content as it should be seen and will handle hours of gaming and the latest consoles, thanks to it’s two HDMI 2.1 ready inputs. The Nano90 is not suited to use in a dimly lit room for critical movie watching as the drawback of this type of panel and the lack of dimming zones just highlights the weaknesses. It is far more successful as a living room workhorse with the lights kept on.

Build quality is reasonable for the price point and the smart TV system is still one of the very best available on the market. Sadly, there is no Freeview Play and there are no signs of the terrestrial catch-up apps appearing from the likes of the BBC iPlayer in the near future, but it does have Disney + and Apple TV+ apps available.

Sound quality is decent for a large TV with downward-firing speakers producing clear dialogue and a nice expansive soundstage. It will, of course, be outperformed by a standalone soundbar for movie watching, but for day to day run of the mill TV viewing it is perfectly adequate.

And that word seems to sum the Nano90 up for me. It is not a world-beater and it doesn’t suddenly reshape the LCD TV landscape with its performance attributes. It’s not a dedicated movie TV for bringing Hollywood to your home in the dark, but within the right environment, the image quality looks accurate and detailed, with decent motion. It has good Smart TV, good input lag for gaming and is a strong performer with the lights on.

We review firmware update 03.10.20 on the LG CX/ GX OLED TV, using two OLED48CX to show the difference from the earlier firmware of 03.00.70 to 03.10.20.

Another upgrade we forgot to mention with firmware 03.10.20 was that the internal pattern generator can now be used to validate HDR10 & HLG calibration.

Since we filmed this video, another firmware version 03.10.44 has gone live, which brings no change in picture performance, only some audio and maybe other improvements.

The LG 48CX on your left looked slightly out of focus, because we were using wide open lens aperture for a cleaner footage with lower ISO.

Warning: Disabling [GSR] in the service menu may increase the risk of permanent OLED screenburn.
