Re: Philips 47PFL9732D/10

_______________________________________________________________I am a moderately happy owner of a brand new
42pfl9732d LCD TV. I contact the research team, since most of my objections
involve functionality issues, rather than quality of picture itself and product in general. Issues I would like
to see addressed in a future firmware upgrade. If I have erroneously contacted R&D, please forward to whom it may concern.
I would like to note, that part of the comparison is based on the functionality of my small ( 600 worth) Sony 20” S2000. It is a base line model, so comparison might seem unfair to a 2.650 Philips TV.
From more to less important:
1.There is no option to reduce overall
backlight intensity, resulting to eyestrain
[1].
2.Most free to air channels transmit 4:3 image. Some though have 16:9 format. If the TV is set to 4:3 format, it
does not automatically switch to 16:9 in those channels. Oppositely, if it is set to automatic format, 16:9 looks fine but 4:3 gets full screen and distorted. Maybe an auto sensing feature for 16:9 that overrides 4:3 setting or
an option for image format per channel?
3.There are no evident
per source image settings.
4.DVD format 1:2,35 plays fine but rather small. There is
no non distorted mode to magnify 1:2,35 image (even cropping portion of right and left side).
5.There are no
shortcut buttons on the TV remote for picture mode (custom/cinema/vivid/normal) etc. One must dig into menus. Maybe option shortcut button could be more customizable. Alternatively, idle keys like colour buttons (red is demo) could be defined as shortcuts.
6.There is no setting (no information either) for the
compensation function of Light Sensor
7.Vertically scrollable modes (like 14:9) do not have a
position indicator when scrolling away from central vertical position.
8.Several DVDs in 1:1,85 format, will fill the entire screen in automatic format. This is good. When a subtitle (bottom of screen) or DVD operation symbol (top, like chapter forward) appears out of the image range,
automatic setting will kick portion of the image out of the screen. In order to return, one must set the image format again.
9.
Manual offers extremely basic information. Web offers no official forum, bare FAQs and no significant technology features explanation.
I am quite pleased from the image and the aforementioned parameters might not prove enough to return it (for i.e. a W or X3000 series Sony), but still I have 8 days from purchase to decide. I would greatly appreciate a respond to my concerns. Even better, a firmware that addresses any of those issues.
[1] Manual is so bare, that is unclear
whether dynamic contrast reduces backlight in darkish areas or just boosts dark details. It is equally vague whether in 4:3 or letterbox mode, parts of the screen with no signal information reduce backlight to show truly black. In fact, they look very poorly black, trying to conceal a totally lit up backlight in those areas.
