Sony Bravia Comparison Chart

The confusion regarding Sony X1 processors and how they differ from the SoC chipset (CPU + GPU) on the motherboard continues.

The SoC on the motherboard is responsible for the speed of the Android TV interface, graphics processing, video encoding and decoding, and support for HDMI features.

The X1 processor is responsible for Sony's own image upscaling, HDR processing, noise reduction systems and color management. (Note: On all Sony TVs up to XH90 (X900H US version), the X1 processor has a separate motherboard chipset between the SoC and the panel that applies Sony's own picture settings to the video output. On the XH90, the X1 feature set is implemented by a board SoC without secondary silicon.)

Over the years, Sony has released different versions of the X1 processor, each with different capabilities, and below is a diagram that describes in detail at a high level the differences between them.

XH95 - MT5893, X1 Ultimate VPU, processing done in both CPU and VPU
XG95 - MT5893, X1 Ultimate VPU, processing done in both CPU and VPU
XH90 - MT5895, no VPU, processing done in CPU

The most common pairs:

X1 Ultimate with MT5893 (combined SoC + VPU)
X1 Extreme with MT5891 (combined SoC + VPU)
X1 HDR (3rd gen.) with MT5895 (SoC only)
X1 HDR (2nd gen.) with MT5893 (combined SoC + VPU)
X1 HDR (1st gen.) with MT5891 (combined SoC + VPU)
X1 with MT5890 (combined SoC + VPU)

Conclusion

Is Sony X900H (XH90 in Europe) the 'PlayStation 5 TV'? Well, it is hard to say for sure until PlayStation 5 arrives and even more crucially until Sony releases the firmware required to enable HDMI 2.1 and related features – no timeline has been announced. However, we would argue that its mediocre HDR picture quality is a big limitation – more and more console games are released in HDR.

The hard numbers are listed in the review but X900H has only half as many dimming zones as its predecessor X900F, and peak brightness rarely rises above 600-700 nits. Sony's zone dimming system is better balanced that Samsung's but blooming is unavoidable in HDR. With SDR content on the other hand, X900H (XH90) delivers convincing performance driven in part by Sony's video processing. It also delivers much better contrast than Sony's LCD TVs with the 'X-Wide Angle' system and is a significant step up from Sony's mid-range LCD TVs (XH8 etc.)

Android has reached version 9.0 in Sony TVs, despite Google having already released Android 11 for TVs. There is not much new to report as Android 9.0 has the same home screen and user interface, only with some minor tweaks here and there. A new chip powering Android TV in X900H delivers more than twice the performance (see benchmarks in the review) of many other new TVs powered by Android but there is still some ground to cover to match the performance of Nvidia Shield and Apple TV 4K, so we hope that Google Stadia can bring better games to Android TVs in the near future.

Sony X900H (XH90) is a worthy successor to the Sony X900F (XF90) but it is not necessarily a better TV in terms of picture quality. It is competitive compared to Samsung's similarly priced LCD TVs with zone dimming and competitive in the segment for large-sized TVs, but is not close to matching OLED TVs that are inching still closer to mainstream prices.

Verdict

The Sony A8 is an excellent OLED TV that now has many of the features of the flagship AG9 and offers superb image accuracy towards the industry standards. It is a great choice for those looking for an OLED for critical movie watching in dark surroundings with super cinematic images in both SDR and HDR.

There is no Dolby Vision IQ or Filmmaker Mode included on the A8 this year, but this doesn’t really have any negative impact as the Custom image preset is accurate out of the box and for Dolby Vision you are best suited to set that to dark mode and adjust the panel luminance for your room. Image accuracy and reproducing the creator’s intent are at the forefront of this OLED TVs capabilities.

The audio performance is also excellent with the Acoustic Surface Audio adding the unique feature of sound actually coming from behind the screen, where it should be positioned. The sound stage is nice and wide with excellent dialogue intelligibility that is focussed right on the screen.

The Android TV system used to be a bugbear of users on older Sony models due to a sluggish performance and numerous crashes, but for the last few years we have seen a marked improvement in this area and the A8 is excellent with Android 9 (Pie) installed. Operation is smooth, fast and stable with an excellent range of mainstream VOD apps from Disney+, Prime Video, Netflix, Rakuten and Britbox as well as all the catch-up services for UK terrestrial services including BBC iPlayer. The tuner is not Freeview Play but rather You View. The general menu system has also seen an update with more detailed explanations of what various controls do, using images and text.

Overall, we really couldn’t fault the Sony A8 (or A8H if you are based in the USA), as it provides superb image accuracy, stunning dynamic range and excellent image quality that matches the creator’s intent. It is a very good choice for those looking for an OLED TV to use for critical movie viewing and it comes highly recommended.

...HDR

The capabilities of the Sony 49XH8505 in HDR mode are better than the average in this price class. Instead of the typical 300-350 cd / m ^ 2, the Sony 49XH8505 could boast a luminance of 450 cd / m ^ 2, regardless of the type of test board. Moreover, the brightness was stable, without the LED clipping gimmicks so typical of some brands...

Summary

I will say briefly: the excellent 48-inch Bravia from the A9 series will go down in history as one of the first "small" OLEDs, because never before has such a small screen offered such high image quality. And although the Sony KD-48A9 is not a cheap TV, I would recommend it without hesitation to all those lucky enough to be able to afford it.

Verdict

The Sony XH95 is yet another strong FALD LCD TV from the company with excellent features and superb image accuracy.

There is no such thing as the perfect TV and we did encounter some issues with the XH95 that were partly down to the technology and how Sony has chosen to implement that. We once again found the issue to be that black bars of scope films will light up when objects in the image are close to them, becoming distracting when watching in dim surroundings and most noticeably with HDR content. Sony is well aware of this and states that to achieve the image accuracy the XH95 is capable of, with deep blacks, superb just above details and impressive contrast, the dimming algorithm has to allow some light leakage into the black bars. How distracting this is for consumers will come down to personal taste and potential owners need to demo the TV to check. For me it was distracting, but there is no doubting that the image quality produced within those black bars is some of the best I have seen from a FALD LCD TV.

Video processing, upscaling and motion remain superb on the XH95 and even the gaming input lag is a respectable 20ms, which will suit most console gamers. The lack of HDMI 2.1 inputs and features is disappointing, especially when Sony will be releasing the next-gen PS5 soon which will take advantage of HDMI 2.1 features.

Overall, the Sony XH95 is an excellent LCD flagship that produces accurate image quality as the creators intended it to be seen in both SDR and HDR. There are a few well-mentioned issues that may affect your mileage with this set and as always we recommend a demonstration before spending this much on a TV, but the XH95 has made some decent improvements over last year’s model and has superb image accuracy. As such we feel it is worthy of an AVForums recommendation.
