Πολυ διασκεδαστικη ταινια δεν εχουν αδικο οσοι την συγκριναν με τον Σωφερ της κυριας Ντειζυ.

RaMell Ross’ documentary, βHale County This Morning, This Eveningβ cannot be watched while simultaneously distracted by outside forces like cell phones or conversations; its immersive lyricism demands the full brunt of our attention. The film has an unusual, time-jumping cadence that’s punctuated by strange sounds, odd music and beautiful, superimposed visions of sky and earth. There are unexpected camera angles and long moments that at first seem monotonous but pay big dividends. Ross weaves all these elements together in such a way that you eventually realize the film is teaching you how to watch it, subtly coaxing you onto its wavelength. Suddenly, you feel like an honorary citizen of the titular place, someone temporarily woven into its fabric.
"By looking at what would lie outside of the traditional framework of most documentaries, Ross builds a much more absorbing picture of people fully embedded within an environment."
βHale County This Morning, This Evening,β is a poetic documentary with a gift for making enrapturing imagery out of what sound like ordinary, everyday events.
.....
Though words can describe what βHale Countyβ shows, they really can’t convey how involving this visual symphony is. As much as anything else, the film is a tribute to the mystical power of the moving image, and to Ross’ keen and empathetic eye.
More than that, the act of putting this world on the big screen makes us pay attention to these lives and gives them the dignity and respect we realize they of course deserve.
Hale County is much more impressionistic, and centered around a fundamentally tranquil relationship between its subjects and their surroundings. Much of the film transpires around social gatherings on public sitesβparking lots, schools, churches, and front and backyardsβand the interactions Ross captures suggest lives so intertwined that the presence of a camera and a filmmaker couldn’t possibly alter or disrupt them.
One of the remarkable things about the film’s offhand sense of intimacy is that it emerges from such a diverse shooting style. Abstracted close-ups dwell on hands in motion (a teen twirling her hair, a group of boys dancing around a car blasting music), while alternately time-lapsed and lengthy, slow tracking shots survey rural landscapes. A group of girls singing through the night are recorded from a distance, and layup drills at a practice session elapse as a series of arms reaching through the air. Ross occasionally switches into a slipstream style of montage that’s purely intuitive, rhyming refracted colors or images of haze floating through a club and then the outdoor air.
.......
His view is that of an outsider who has been entrusted with intimate access to others, and his film constantly seems to be negotiating that trust, embracing mundane and magical moments while observing more serious incidents from a distance, or not at all. Hale County dwells on the beauty of the everyday as it recognizes the fragility of individual lives.
While they and other people we meet talk to Ross and provide some exposition, more often than not the camera is just a casual observer without commentary; it’s simply watching people go about their daily business. This allows the viewer to be present, though not in a βfly-on-the-wallβ sense. The camera subtracts a casual observer’s protective distance and gets close to these people, putting you in the room with them in probably the same spot you’d be had you gone in person. At some points, the person being filmed responds to the camera as if he or she were responding to you directly.
One of the best scenes highlights this: Kyrie, Quincy’s child with girlfriend Boosie, entertains himself by running around the room while his family watches old movies on TV. The camera remains static as Kyrie runs and runs and runs. The scene, like several others, seems to go on forever before you realize you’re watching a story of sorts. It becomes clear that Kyrie is engaging in play and also performing for the camera. Another long scene observes a locker room before a basketball game, lingering long enough for us to observe what each player is doing if we so desireβit becomes another little story, an observation that’s as mundane as it is enlightening.
As befitting a photographer, Ross films spectacular images with compositions that tell stories without words. But snippets of dialogue help us piece together the current story of this historical region.
