Got a chance to test drive one with the pencil for about an hour this morning using the new Procreate and OneNote. Quick thoughts:
Pros
- The lack of parallax is awesome
- Line stability is great, even slow lines
- Screen quality is fantastic
- Responsiveness with canvas touch functions (zoom, pan, rotate, etc) is unmatched
- Tilt capability is cool if a little gimmicky
- Form factor: super light and easy to hold, nice aspect ratio
Cons
- Definitely some latency that's not there in AES, N-Trig and EMR (when used with proper hardware). I'd say it's comparable or a little worse than using the Cintiq Companion Hybrid with Android drawing apps (e.g. Layer Paint HD)
- Pencil is a little heavy and the length is awkward
- Lack of pen buttons is a bummer
- Some pressure oddities when drawing/writing quickly, though it was better in OneNote than Procreate
- The nib was less slippery than I thought it'd be based on early feedback, but still pretty slippery. If Apple doesn't, I'm sure 3rd parties will create replacement nibs since it's easy to remove
- Software limitations
For me there are two deal breakers, the aforementioned slight latency would make it annoying for sketching and note taking compared to other solutions, and software limitations inherent to dealing with a mobile OS. Procreate is pretty impressive, but it's got a ways to go to be comparable to desktop solutions for production work. Plus the need to jump between mobile OS and desktop environment is still problematic for many workflows.
I don't think I'd have rushed out to get one even if the drawing experience was perfect because the software environment was likely to be too limiting, but at least for now I'm not left clamoring for this digitizer tied to a desktop OS.
